We have an NFS share running on a Windows Server box where we put our daily Proxmox VE backups, in the .tar format. Sometimes there is a need to extract only 1 or 2 files from these (OpenVZ) backups.

We have tried to open these backups with WinRAR, 7-Zip, PeaZip and PowerArchiver, most of them have no problems opening archives that are well under 1GB, but unable to handle typical 5-10GB images.

We have also tried to extract from these archives by opening them over NFS with Midnight Commander on Linux, but while it manages to list them, extraction shows an I/O error.

Anyone know of a reliable way to list and extract from these multi-gigabyte TAR archives on either Windows or Linux?

e.g. with tar -xvvf vzdump*.tar
