Hello,

After testing this faboulous hypervisor, I've decide to install it on my ovh dedicated server (Xeon CPU E3-1225 V2). And, sad surprise, I can't install a pfSense amd64 (it freeze after showing the boot menu of the live CD) while this distro work fine on another server (xeon X3450). I've try to lauch this working vm on the dedicated server, and without surprise it dosen't work. The kernel are almost the sames (2.6.32-23-pve & 2.6.32-24-pve). For this time, the i386 work fine, so it's not my wish.

I've forgot a step ? It's a CPU issue or a proxmox issue ?

Tanks for your help

CPU type 'qemu32' works as well. I would recommend qemu32 instead of host should you want to make live migration.
virtio nics does not work for me if you have more than one (or maybe two) nics. Since I have 5 I use e1000 for all nics. Works flawlessly.
For disk I use virtio but the installation must be done to either ide or sata first. Change to virtio after first boot and enable virtio drivers in
/boot/loader.conf.local

virtio_load="YES"
virtio_pci_load="YES"
#if_vtnet_load="YES"
virtio_balloon_load="YES"
virtio_blk_load="YES"

Nachtflke : thanks for the link, I've missed this thread. Many helpfull infos ! For the CPU choice, I've for this time running my pfsense on a kvm32 and E1000 NICs. Bad idea ?

mir : I've read some mess about qemu perfs vs kvm, so I will prefer kvm32. For the nics I've 4... so goodbye virtIO. I want try a virtIO drive later, thanks for the tips & config !

The pfsense amd64 boot without the KVM virtualisation option and a sandybridge or a kvm64, so what the reals effects to disable this ? It's a worst idea to use pfsense amd64 without this option than use an i386 with kvm hardware virtu enabled ? I've in the same time strange problems with the load on this server : it run 5 openVZ containers and one kvm guest (pfsense), and the load reach 7 some minutes after reboot (1 process running for 4 cores, 10Go of memory free and less than 500Ko/s of IO drive access). Do you think it can be linked to this ?

sorry for the number of questions, I'm a little disapointed (and I'm not a virtu expert !)
thanks

Hi,

I had strange performance problems of the GUI when running my pfsense as CPU type "Sandy Brider" or any other than "Host". The performance with E1000 as NIC was ok - probably this will work if you do not have such much throughput through pfsense. You should test this. If performance is ok no need to change. Same is for the CPU. If performance is enough for your bandwidth on pfsense then no need to worry or change.
