ubuntu 10.04 installation paints the screen slowly

I noticed that when I attempt to install ubuntu, in this case 10.04, in a full kvm instance that the screen paints each step slowly. Is there some tweak that needs to be applied to install ubuntu correctly. I did not notice this when I installed suse or redhat.
