Dear Proxmox ve fans, I have completed good video tutorials to those beginners who want to make two proxmox ve nodes (clustered ) with the DRBD shared storage, I used the Oracle virtual box and fully virtual environment in my workI wish that my language would be clear, these are the youtube links:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjORUwDY63Uhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwZzsVIY3tkhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWu0QMnNTuwhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iY8bSHzw7zQhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoghoI5MahMhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3exKzOv8nQAِnd because my mother language is the Arabic , I have made this tutorial in Arabic:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qq-x4QpapM8http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4uuG-0i_xIhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spmOqpkCFAII wish they will be useful for those who try to build a shared storage using DRBD

Hi @halnabriss , you use fence_ilo device, but is the virtualbox vms have ilo ?

fence_ilo is the same as HP ilo ?

The fencing worked without problems in the virtual environment, but in your real environment you have to configure the hp ilo port ( or the idrac port if you use Dell poweredge servers as I do )

Thanks, your video tutorials is very informative.

Thanks ebiss,
I spent almost one month to accomplish this task , so I decided to make this video to help others to spend only two hours :)

It is my pleasure to see my videos on the wiki, thanks m.ardito

Hi, I just linked your video series from here
http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/DRBD/Videotutorials
which is atm linked by
http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Special:WhatLinksHere/DRBD/Videotutorials

I think that you did a great job also by splitting fundamental steps like cluster setup, drbd install, drbd setup, HA configuration and so on.
So I hope this helps more people, even if they're not necessarily interest in DRBD setup.

Mind, this is my initiative, not necessarily supported or approved by pve team, so it could be changed by them or others.
[edit: it just happened, see http://pve.proxmox.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=DRBD&action=history, now I reverted but... who knows]

btw, what this "Ago" means? I'm just curious?
thanks Agom.ardito and Agotommasch78

Cheers,
Marco

:)I'm sorry, you have to blame the copy and paste

Haha ok, I though of some sort of strange greeting... :D from the videos I guessed you're from the State of Palestine (you pinged www.google.ps, IIRC).

I'm sorry but another (stupid imho) user in the wiki moved my article about your videos around, since he thinks they're more related with HA than DRBD... I think the videos are related to both, and more, since they cover many topics... I already complained with pve staff (martin), but as soon as I make my edits, he deletes them and moves, deletes renames everything without even asking what others think... thanks again for the videos.

Cheers/Ciao
Marco

I just went through these videos and I am sorry to say that you show a setup which is risky and which is also not working as new users expects from Proxmox VE HA, described here: http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/High_Availability_Cluster

As you do not cover some issues in your tutorial I do not think this is a good idea to present this to beginners with HA.

Or in other words: if a new an inexperience user starts with such a setup he will get the opposite of high availability - guaranteed issues and downtime.

Here is a short list of issues in your setup:

  • you ignore the quorum and set expected votes=1. this means each node have always quorum and you always will have a split brain by design.
  • Proxmox VE HA needs 3 nodes to prevent quorum issues. A 2 node setup is not recommended and not a supported setup for production use. 2 nodes are not working in all cases nothing for new users without knowing the involved shortcomings in detail
  • DRBD is not integrated in our HA stack (DRBD resources are not managed by rgmanger), so there are cases that you run into a split brain here, too.

It would be great if you describe a recommended setup for HA - e.g. 3 nodes, SAN or NFS, power fencing, redundant networks setup - and I would suggest not using DRBD8 as this is never a good idea for beginners and so far limited for two nodes - not really fits into our stack.

Thanks Marco, Dear tom, yes the solution is a very dangerous solution, but I tried to build it over a virtual environment so all the interested can make more tests to check how to solve Split Brain issues and how to overwrite the data of one node (and the risk of this operation ) .for me, recently I received two Dell PowerEdge Servers , with high specifications and 30TB storage for each, and I built this solution in my real environment but with iDrac fencing configurations, I wish it won't make troubles for me :)thanks

I just added what Martin suggested me, ie the Tom notes above, so that anyone is clearly warned of the risks of that setup.
(any other suggestion by proxmox staff could change that in the future, btw)

Marco
