Suspend Backups cause all vms to lose network access

I'm not using the Backup server. I'm using the built in backup.

I have a vm that is montirored with an sms alerting. When the backups run, this vm is not included in the backup. However, it loses network connectivity during the backup process. I can't figure out why this would happen. None of the servers being backed up would affect it's network connectivity.

Is this a known issue or glitch? Are all VMs suspended when backing up a few?

No and No.
Where do you store the backups? The network might be saturated by the running backup jobs. You can set a limit (s. link) in the Advanced tab of the backup job.

It doesn't matter the storage, local or network. That was the first thing we tried was to use local storage to see if it was a network bandwidth issue. The server in question actually uses it's own bridge, aka separate network adapter in the proxmox server. Unless that doesn't matter?

Would you like to elaborate a bit more on the setup (cpu, hardware, storage and network configuration)?
Do I understand you correctly, that the issue persists even with a local backup? Have you taken a look at the metrics, any spikes when doing the backup? To make this clear: It is not common to have an impact on a vm when from another one a backup is made of.
 
a backup should only directly affect the VM being backed up. but of course the additional load caused by the backup can cause issue for other guests as well, if yours system doesn't have enough head room..
