Stupid question...how do you backup, the backup server?

Hi All,

Just started using PBS and I have to say that after a bit of head-scratching...it appears to work very well. First backups take a while to complete but after that it makes quick work of doing the incremental updates. Moving off onto LTO5 at circa 140MBs...all just seems to work.

However, a question from the paronoid person on my shoulder...how do I backup...the backup server? Can I take a backup to a Proxmox VE, export the configuration, tar...?

It's a bare metal install.

What are you trying to accomplish? You can already set up remote sync in PBS for datastores, these contain all info needed for complete restore of VMs and CTs.

I am looking for a way to backup my PBS server, just in case I needed to rebuild it.

You can backup /etc folder manually or with rsync, but usually there isn't much to back up.

Configuration is easy and quick to set back up in the event of a complete rebuild. There isn't a built in way to backup config with PBS as far as I know, same goes for PVE.

@Scotty https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/backing-up-pve-host-zfs-boot-disks-to-pbs.165169/post-767215 can be used to back up PBS as well as hosts. Reportedly Proxmox has backing up of hosts on their roadmap but no ETA.

What you do with the backup is another question but I also felt better with the hosts backed up.

Just install PVE as Host OS, and PBS as VM. Add PBS Datastore Disk als RawDevice, and exclude the Disk from Backup.

Gives you also the ability to run an additional admin VM oder Docker on backup host for emergency cases.
