I want to know if it is possible to remote SSH into my proxmox server (i already have xfce installed on it) and just write in terminal a command to launch the desktop environment?
Currently when I have physical access to my server it automatically shows the DE (desktop environment) and i log on from there, however that doesnt happen when i remote SSH into it, it stays in the command line.
Would appreciate any help as this would be insanely useful to manage the proxmox GUI without having to have VMs automatically start up.

no, you need some sort of remote desktop solution for that (e.g., x2go is a popular one).

with x2go you can start an XFCE session on the server that is proxied via SSH to your local machine - but that is not related to PVE in any way, so you might have more luck searching for generic Debian-related howtos ;)

I apologize for my lack of experience but isnt normally xfce supposed to have built in a "screen sharing" option in the settings? Or maybe did I install a light version of xfce (if that even exists?) which does not include this feature or setting. Either way would it be possible to point me somewhere toward those generic debian how tos? I would really appreciate that.

there is also the option of sharing the screen (using something like VNC server) - but that only works if you already have a local graphical session started on the other/remote system. x2go starts a graphical session without graphical output, so to speak - and redirects that over the network. both have their pros and cons - but again, these questions might be better asked (and answered with expertise :)) in a support forum for Linux desktop questions ;)

Thank you so much for your feedback, I will definitely try it!
But on a last note could I just ask as to why the "screen sharing" feature is not available in my instance (whether it is xfce or x11 specifically) and if it is due to me missing something on my part as I just want to understand/ learn.

I don't know whether XFCE is supposed to come with a default VNC server or if not, which ones are compatible (I neither use XFCE nor a VNC server ;))
