Recommended managed switches for Proxmox (VLAN support)

Hi everyone,

I’ve just registered on the Proxmox support forum and I’d like to ask for some advice regarding managed network switches that work well with Proxmox, especially for VLAN usage.

To give some context about my setup:

  • I currently have 3 Intel NUCs and one GPU rig, all running Proxmox.
  • At the moment, I’m using a TP-Link T1600G-18TS switch.

In the past, I tried to configure VLANs on this TP-Link switch, but Proxmox didn’t seem to recognize them properly at the time. After struggling with it for a while, I gave up on VLANs at the physical network level.

Because of that:

  • All Proxmox hosts are currently in the same subnet, which I honestly really dislike and want to fix.
  • For network segmentation, I’m relying only on Proxmox internal SDN for the VMs.

I’d really like to move to a cleaner setup with proper VLANs on the switch side.
So my question is:

Which managed switches do you usually recommend or see working best with Proxmox (VLANs, trunking, etc.)?

Any recommendations, experiences, or things to avoid would be very appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

Hi,

From the specs your switch should work.

Are you sure you have not made a mistake with your VLAN config ?

Best regards,

Hi,

As @janus57 already wrote, your switch can do what you want. As a side note, I use extensive only Mikrotik(routers and switchs) for ProxMox. I like it a lot because are very flexible and support a lot of features for a good price for a decent performance. Usually I use the firewall part for ProxMox on the Mikrotik router, because it is more simple for my taste !

Good luck / Bafta !

Awesome, thank you very much for your fast answers folks, really appreciated!

@guletz , when it comes to your Mikrotik networking switch, would you mind sharing the exact model?

Once again, thank you very much!

Hi again,

Tell me how many ports do you need, and what speed / connectors(Gbit, spf+, what-ever).
Also take in account that you will need to learn the basics(witch will take time). You coud have an ideea about using a CHR(VM):

Good luck / Bafta !
