Random system freeze on PN51-E1

Hi, recently I got myself an ASUS PN51-E1 (Ryzen 7 5700U) as a upgrade for my homelab.
Migration went quite smoothly, however, I'm experiencing random kernal panic.
I've managed to setup kdump, and finally captured some error log.
Hope someone can help me shed some light on this issue, thanks.

Hi,

just a random shot in the dark: have you updated bios/firmware on your host?
 
Installed 5.19, looks fine when I only have QEMU machines running.
LXC still caused system freeze, with no kdump trace, system went complete dark, which is weird.
I even spin up a brand new LXC container (Ubuntu 22.04), with nothing running within, and it still freezes the host after a few hours.

Anyway, I'll stick with QEMU for now, will update this thread if QEMU cause any systen freeze.

Thank you for the update!

Did you try older 5.15 kernels as well? 5.15.60, 5.15.53 and so on?
Did they run without kernel panics?

I did try using 5.15.64 at first.
Are you suggesting that I should try to downgrade the kernel to an older version?

Did you check the RAM by running memtest86+ over night? Often bad RAM is causing freezes/crashes and this would be an easy job to sort that out.

Tried with 5.19, 5.15,5.13 and 5.11 kernels today, and it freezes after a while (5 min to a couple of hours), also tried to disable "ballooning" on the vm's (as was suggested in another post) to see if that helped, but sadly no.

Tested this before and after I updated to newest BIOS (0503), and I also did multiple hours of memtest86+ without any indication of bad memory.

Was more stable say like a month or two ago, did freeze now and then (once a month maybe). Did more or less blame other factors, but ye, looks like it's the same thing just happining a lot more frequent now.

Of course, that's the first thing I did before posting. I've also switched the SSD, and it still freezes.

Yes, also using BIOS 0503.
Also when LXC containers are running, it just went offline completely when it freezes, kdump didn't record anything.
 
Did some more testing, installed Windows, added load (cpu, io and net), and it has been going for 8/9 hours without any issues.
After I did the same with a fresh install of Ubuntu 22.04 (kernel 5.15), has been running all night, and still going. So I'm fairly certain it's not HW.

Next step I think would be to try vmware esx on it, running a vm or two with load, see how that behaves.

Any other suggestions to narrow down the issue?


Update: No net drivers in esx so can't install, derp

Last quite a while before crash with Kernel 5.19.17
 
It seems the APUs have some issues.
In another thread we had people with a 4800U that had issues. One of them solved it by disabling C6 state (power saving).

Could you try this as well?

Tried some new stuff the last couple of days related to APU/GPU/C-state:

#1 Booted with "processor.max_cstate=1 intel_idle.max_cstate=0", and querying after boot shows only C0 and C1 available.

#2 Disabled "PSS Support" (wich should be ACPI power states) in BIOS/UEFI. Witch makes the /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpuidle "disappear", witch I guess means it's disabled completely.

#3 Change "GPU Framebuffer Size" in BIOS/UEFI from Auto to 1G (Too see if the MEM auto-assignment screw things up)

#4 "idle=nomwait" kernel boot parameter as suggested as solution for freeze issues in the arch wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Ryzen)

#5 "pci=nomsi" kernel boot parameter as suggested as solution for freeze issues in the arch wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Ryzen)


Tried each of this steps and none did any difference, system still freezes after it has been running for a while.
 
I also tried using systemd to disable C6 state upon system boot.
That also didn't help resolve this situation.
 
Installed 6.1 yesterday and did let it run overnight, but unfortunately it was frozen again this morning.

Hi,

I have a similar issue with my ASUS Mini PC PN51-BB757MDS1 with Ryzen 7 5700U - Proxmox freezes about once a week. Everything upgraded to newest released version.

I've got a PN51-E1 and have a lot of freezes as well. When the Proxmox freeze, the network port is overloading my switch/network. Only a power cycle works :(
 
So, it happened today again, and I got this on the console - not sure about the timing, but thought I’d post to help debug anyway…
