I know PVE is based on debian (with rh-kernel and some patches), but how tightly it actually depends on debian? Would it be possible to install PVE on some other non-debian based linux-distro (gentoo, centos, slackware, etc)?

I know I could compile KVM/qemu/lxc on virtually any linux, but I would still miss all that nice PVE-ecosystem, with web-interface, some libraries/utilities, etc.

PVE 4.x is based on Debian Jessie with an Ubuntu based kernel, and not tested on anything else. If you install on anything other than Debian Jessie, you will run into problems (and will have to fix them yourself).
