Hi everyone, we’re preparing to migrate from VMware to Proxmox VE and have some questions about the compatibility of Proxmox VE 9.X with our Commvault backup tool.

We initially opted for a Thick LVM configuration via iSCSI with disks in RAW format.

However, according to the Commvault documentation, backing up VMs on LVM Thick involves complications such as:

- The QEMU version of the VMs must be lower than 10 (but it’s difficult to consider downgrading it, since the default is 11)

Alternatively, we might need to switch from the RAW format to QCOW2, since native snapshots are supported on that format.

See Commvault documentation: https://documentation.commvault.com/11.42/software/backups_for_proxmox_vms.html?view=saas)

I hope to hear from someone who uses Proxmox and Commvault! Thanks in advance, and have a great day.

"For Proxmox VE 8.x environments, only RAW format disks are supported. All the disks on the VM should be in RAW format for backups to be successful. The QEMU version of the VM must be < 10"

"For Proxmox VE 8.x or 9.x environments that use RAW format disks, the staging directory must be configured in the VM group. For more information about configuring the staging directory, see Managing VM Group Content for Proxmox"
