We are pleased to announce the first beta release of Proxmox Virtual Environment 8.0! The 8.x family is based on the great Debian 12 "Bookworm" and comes with a 6.2 kernel, QEMU 8.0.2, LXC 5.0.2, OpenZFS 2.1.11.

Note: The current release of Proxmox Virtual Environment 8.0 is a beta version. If you test or upgrade, make sure to first create backups of your data. We recommend Proxmox Backup Server to do so.

Here are some of the highlights of the Proxmox VE 8.0 beta version
  • Ceph Server:
    • Ceph Quincy 17.2 is the default and comes with continued support.
    • There is now an enterprise repository for Ceph which can be accessed via any Proxmox VE subscription, providing the best stability for production systems.
  • Integrate host network bridge and VNet access when configuring virtual guests into Proxmox VE's ACL system.
  • Add access realm sync jobs to conveniently synchronize users and groups from an LDAP/AD server automatically at regular intervals.
  • Countless GUI and API improvements.

Q: Can I upgrade latest Proxmox VE 7 to 8 beta with apt?

Q: Can I upgrade an 8.0 beta installation to the stable 8.0, once released, via apt?
A: Yes, upgrading from beta to stable installation will be possible via apt.

Q: Can I upgrade my Proxmox VE 7.4 cluster with Ceph Pacific to 8.0 beta?
A: This is a two-step process. First, you have to upgrade Ceph from Pacific to Quincy, and afterward you can upgrade Proxmox VE from 7.4 to 8.0. There are a lot of improvements and changes, so please follow exactly the upgrade documentation:

But is it really going to run on kernel 6.2?? Despite the fact the Debian 12 (Bookworm) runs on LTS kernel 6.1.

Proxmox VE always had its own kernel, providing support for features like ZFS and ensuring that we can release fixes more quickly than it would be possible with the Debian kernel.

I have this error when executing "apt update":

W: Skipping acquire of configured file 'pve-no-subscription/binary-amd64/Packages' as repository 'http://download.proxmox.com/debian/pve bookworm InRelease' doesn't have the component 'pve-no-subscription' (component misspelt in sources.list?)
W: Skipping acquire of configured file 'pve-no-subscription/i18n/Translation-en' as repository 'http://download.proxmox.com/debian/pve bookworm InRelease' doesn't have the component 'pve-no-subscription' (component misspelt in sources.list?)

My sources seems to be ok. If i try to "apt dist-upgrade" it gives me:

W: (pve-apt-hook) You are attempting to remove the meta-package 'proxmox-ve'!

EDIT: found the problem: "deb http://download.proxmox.com/debian/pve bookworm pvetest" was not in my sources.list.

There is no 'pve-no-subscription' repository until now. you have to use 'pvetest' as shown in the first post in the FAQ.

BTW: Wanted to upgrade my private Server to a new SSD and used the beta above. No problems until now. Pentium 4xxxu, NVME ssd with a single 2 TB and ZFS (zstd)

I have a question regarding the change "Drop support for Ceph Octopus and Pacific, as they are not supported in Proxmox VE 8."
Does this mean that if we are running an external ceph cluster on Octopus (not Proxmox) Proxmox 8 will simply not work anymore?
And then we would have to upgrade that ceph cluster first before upgrading to Proxmox 8?

No, this is w.r.t. hyper-converged ceph server setups.

The Ceph Quincy client shipped by the beta still supports accessing older ceph setups as client, as does the in kernel RBD driver.
I'll clarify that part a bit in the release notes.

And note, for Pacific you might want to make upgrade plans soon due to that release going EOL: https://docs.ceph.com/en/latest/releases/index.html

The librbd is backward compatible with older version of ceph,
and in reverse way ,ceph cluster have some tuning option, to keep compatibility with older clients

I have a question regarding upgrading from Version 7 to Version 8 by "New Installation" method from this guide https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Upgrade_from_7_to_8

Currently I have a dedicated Proxmox 7.4 mirrored boot drive and a separate mirrored drive for VM images only. Do I still need to backup all VMs to external storage like it is instructed in the guide? Or maybe I can simply use existing dedicated mirrored drive for VM images and somehow connect/import to new Proxmox 8 system?

Proxmox VE 7.0 beta to Proxmox VE 7.0 stable took 12 days (from 2021-06-24 to 2021-07-06)
Proxmox VE 6.0 beta to Proxmox VE 6.0 stable took 12 days (from 2019-07-04 to 2019-07-16)

Is it safe to assume that Proxmox VE 8.0 will also be released in 12 days as well or the above is just a coincidence and it can take much longer than that? Asking because I just did a fresh install of Proxmox VE 7.4 and don't know should I do migration to 8 now or wait a little bit for stable version, since in July I will not have time a chance to do this.
