I have upgrade two cluster nodes to 2011-3 socket with an E5-1650v3 and an ASUS Z10PA-U8 motherboard.
Work without trouble. The third node is still pending (waiting for the motherboard).

AFAIK the i7 don't support ecc-ram - so I don't use such cpus in server.

If you need ECC ram and a desktop CPU then Haswell i3 (socket 1150) supports ECC ram
