Hi All
First time post here, I am about to purchase the MS-01 from minisforum, intel i9-13900h and have been doing a little research, it seems from what I can tell most installs are OK on this machine with a bit of tweaking required, however I thought I would reach out to this community if anyone has successfully or unsuccessfully installed proxmox on the ms-01 and what I should expect or look out for etc before I commit to the purchase.
My hope is to use this device as my home server to run a few VMs for testing, LXCs and Truenas..

Any help & advise would be greatly appreciated
Thankyou!

Make sure you install the Intel Microcode updates. Instructions about halfway down the page here. These instructions are for PVE 7.x but they apply the same way to 8.x.

This is important because (a) the more recent microcode improves stability of VMs on Intel Big/Little architecture CPUs used in the MS-01 and (b) it will pick up the recent voltage management update for the "oxidation" bug in 13th gen CPUs (not clear whether this applies to Mobile CPUs - but also not clear that it does not!).

Also, some people have reported stability issues with the MS-01 on Proxmox if you have the 13th gen CPU and run 96GB of ram. If you have the 13th gen CPU either stick with 64GB or less or beg/plead with MinisForum for the 1.24 BIOS update (currently in Beta, only available on request IF you can convince them you really need it).

Hi PigLover, Thank you very much for your help
Sorry for the question, I'm only new to this... but at what point in the installation process do I install the Microde updates? I currently still have windows 11 on the device, I haven't wiped it yet to run the Proxmox installer, am planning to tonight

Install the microcode update after installing Proxmox. The instructions are linked in my initial reply above.

I just installed the 1.24 beta bios (96gb Crucial RAM). Do you guys have some feedback on it already ? does it still crashes after a while ? I've manually set the RAM at 5200mhz.

Hey Inferno68, I'm in a similar setup with 2 x 48 GB Crucial RAM.
Have you applied the Intel microcode update as well, and if so, did it not resolve the issues? Have you noticed any improvements or persistent issues with the new BIOS?

Could you also share how you accessed the BIOS update? I’m interested in trying it out to see if it might stabilize my system as well.

Thanks in advance for any feedback you can provide!

Hi ! I requested it on the servethehome forums, there is a guy from Minisforum on it which send you the bios via a Google drive link if you request it.
The microcode alone did not resolve the issue. And for now I am basically waiting for it to crash. I did the bios update 4 days ago (on 3 units).

Thanks a lot, I'll try to get my hands on the BIOS to.

Hi, now we have released a new bios version for Minisforum ms-01 workstation. I don't know if this is still completely stable either, but there's another fix, for the better..Näyttökuva 2024-10-23 230443.png

for what it's worth.. with the new bios rock solid here with 4 NVME SSD's and 2 10 GB cards running a number of virtual machines and LXC containers 24x7.

My Setup.
MS-01 13900h
1TB 980pro NVME
4TB Lexar NVME
2X16GB RAM
10Gb DAC to QNAP Switch

PVE 8.3
VMs: Homeassistant, DSM, Unraid with Dockers (Minecraft, Cloudflare, TVModaic, Lyrion)

Rock Solid, but 70W Standby Power with 1-2% CPU.
What are your Values

All 4 of them with Intel microcode. Rocksolid. Very happy so far. Cheers

I ran lscpu -e on my machine (i9-13900H).
Assumption:
Core 00 - 11 --> 6 P-cores with an additional thread each
Core 12 - 19 --> 8 E-Cores

But I'm surprised that only 4 cores with 5400 MHZ are specified.
How is it with you?
I have installed intel-microcode
# grep microcode /proc/cpuinfo | uniq
gives 0x4123

I've been experiencing sporadic crashes/reboots on my Proxmox VE 8.3.4 system, sometimes even overnight when the system is almost idle.
The issue persists under different conditions:

  • Setup: ~20 LXC containers, 2 VMs (but even happens after a fresh install with just one Plex LXC).
  • Crash Conditions:
    • Happens also under low load (e.g., overnight when nothing is running).
    • Occurred while using Plex or right after a CPU stress test, even though temps return to normal.
    • No clear correlation between crashes and CPU, RAM, or disk utilization.
  • System Details:
    • Hardware: Minisforum MS-01 (i5-12600H)
    • Proxmox Install:
      • Proxmox on a 256GB NVMe.
      • ZFS (Mirror) on two Crucial P3 Plus 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD for LXC/VMs
    • Memory: 32GB Crucial DDR5 4800MHz (2x16GB)
    • BIOS: 1.26V (Updated)
    • Microcode: 0x435 (Updated)

What I've Tried So Far

  • Crash logs: No signs of high CPU load or overheating before crashes.
  • OOM Killer logs: Some out-of-memory (OOM) events in LXC containers, but not right before the crash.
  • Memtest86: No RAM errors detected.
  • ZFS scrub & SMART tests: No SSD errors reported.
  • Reinstalled Proxmox: Still happens even with just one Plex LXC running.
Any ideas on what else to check?

Has anyone managed to get vPro working on one dedicated 2.5gbe port while corosync traffic is dedicated to the other 2.5gbe port? I can't seem to de-couple how this works, and admittedly I have very little experience with vPro.
