it would make sense to set up a small VPN so that the PBS is only reachable from within. Generally, an IP that is publicly reachable for things that are not supposed to be publicly accessible always carries a risk.
For the VPN I'd recommend something like WireGuard[1], it is lightweight and relatively easy to set up. [2] is a script that set up the server for you and manages users.

Works fine, I firewalled it to my servers IP's by fiddling with iptables in the PBS installation.
Also used the option to encrypt the data before sending it to the PBS server.
just remember to backup the decryption keys somewhere else (perhaps your password manager or some such)

Not sure if this helps, but there are companies that publicly host a PBS for you. For example this one mentioned by Proxmox. Maybe there are more PBS providers like that? VPS are cheap but storage tends to be expensive.
Hetzner has very cheap and good storage nodes (SX). They come with DC nvme drives which allow to speed up ZFS(cache,ZIL,Special device). they have a 1G flat and bandwidth is good.
