we're excited to announce the release of Proxmox Backup Server 3.0. It's based on Debian 12 "Bookworm", but uses the newer Linux kernel 6.2, and includes ZFS 2.1.12.

Here are the highlights
  • Debian 12, with a newer Linux kernel 6.2
  • ZFS 2.1.12
  • Additional text-based user interface (TUI) for the installer ISO
  • Many improvements for tape handling
  • Sync jobs: “transfer-last” parameter for more flexibility
We have included countless bugfixes and improvements on many places; see the release notes for all details.

FAQ
Q: Can I upgrade the latest Proxmox Backup Server 2.x to 3 with apt?
A: Yes, please follow the upgrade instructions on https://pbs.proxmox.com/wiki/index.php/Upgrade_from_2_to_3

Q: How does this integrate into Proxmox Virtual Environment?
A: Just add a Proxmox Backup Server datastore as a new storage target in your Proxmox VE. Make sure that you run the latest Proxmox VE 8.x for optimal compatibility.

Q: Is Proxmox Backup Server still compatible with older clients or Proxmox VE releases?
A: We are actively testing compatibility between all currently supported major versions, including the previous version. Full compatibility with even older (major) client versions is supported only on a best effort basis.

Q: How do I install the proxmox-backup-client on my Debian or Ubuntu server?
A: We provide a "Proxmox Backup Client-only Repository", see https://pbs.proxmox.com/docs/installation.html#client-installation

Q: What will happen with the existing backup tool (vzdump) in Proxmox Virtual Environment?
A: You can still use vzdump. The new backup is an additional, but very powerful way to backup and restore your VMs and containers.

Q: Is there any recommended server hardware for the Proxmox Backup Server?
A: We recommend enterprise-grade server hardware components, with fast local SSD/NVMe storage. Access and response times from rotating drives will slow down all backup server operations. See https://pbs.proxmox.com/docs/installation.html#recommended-server-system-requirements

Q: Can I install Proxmox Backup Server on Debian, in a VM, as LXC or alongside with Proxmox VE?
A: Yes, but all this is not the recommended setup (expert use only).

Q: Where can I get more information about upcoming features?
A: Follow the announcement forum and pbs-devel mailing list https://lists.proxmox.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pbs-devel, and subscribe to our newsletter https://www.proxmox.com/news and see https://pbs.proxmox.com/wiki/index.php/Roadmap

Great, on the roadmap are left only the most interesting features:
- Support (tape-like) syncing to S3/Object storage types
- Proxmox VE host backup

3.1/2 will be even better releases ;)

Hi,
Nice job.
@fiona console installer works fine here, although there is not so many options like in the PVE installer, but I set 0 to the LVM partition and the installer works straight forward.
Just to let you know.

Thanks Proxmox team.

Thank you for the feedback! The issue you reported right after Proxmox VE 8 was released should also be fixed in the newer version of the Proxmox VE installer ISO: 8.0-2 (commit: https://git.proxmox.com/?p=pve-installer.git;a=commit;h=98c856e86a8431f795eb2508f7f2c9d34f2b0c22)

Does this mean, PVE has to be upgraded to version 8 first before PBS can be upgraded to version 3? I cannot upgrade PBS to version 3 first and then upgrade PVE to version 8 later on? Or did I misunderstand this FAQ entry?

Smooth upgrade from 2.4.2
Running in a VM on Proxmox VE 8 with disk passthrough.
Good job!

PVE 7.X + PBS 2.X requires Debian Bullseye and PVE8.X and PBS3.X require Debian Bookworm. So you can't mix them when both are installed bare metal on the same host. But no problem in case you got dedicated servers or you run the PBS in a VM.

Did someone already test if backups from proxmox-backup-client v3 to a proxmox-backup-server v2 are working?

Would like to backup my PVE7/PBS2 servers with a Debian 12 + v3 client before upgrading them to PVE8/PBS3.

That certainly sounds as if PBS3 only supports backing up from PVE8 environments. Nowhere else is compatibility explicitly mentioned, right?

If it was meant to express the "co-installing PBS3 ontop of a PVE8" it should be worded differently.

I am confused

No, those are two sentences, 1. just add it 2. make sure to run latest Proxmox VE (for optimal compatibility, i.e., feature use).

W.r.t. compatibility in general, a post I recently wrote:
We don't break backward compatibility in point releases, so if you're already on 2.1, going to 2.4 should not affect older clients that are working now.

In general, for a solution with external use sites like Proxmox Backup Server we also try to keep backward compat for older clients even in new major releases. But, periodic tests are only done for currently supported releases, while older only best effort or at support requests, so we cannot give a hard guarantee that older will never break.

The backup format itself will almost certainly never break, even if we'll add new versions of it, older versions will still be readable for at least a decade (and normally, even longer).

I clarified above FAQ by adding "for optimal compatibility" to the one in question and a separate point about general compatibility.

Yes, that still works fine currently, i.e., we made no breaking changes regarding forward-compatibility in the client w.r.t. backups.

Well, as disclaimer for future users reading this: at least yet, might change with future point releases.
But, as the base API and protocol for backup is pretty static, with the biggest change being namespace addition last year, which was also done in such a way that it was forward compatible, I don't think that we would have to break forward-compat either this releases series. Also, as we still would need to be compatible with original 3.0 anyway, and as that was compatible with 2.4, there's basically a transitive compat "chain" for 2.x to 3.x releases.
