We are very excited to announce the first stable release of our new Proxmox Backup Server!

Proxmox Backup Server is an enterprise backup solution, for backing up and restoring virtual machines, containers, and physical hosts. With key features like incremental backups, deduplication, Zstandard compression, and authenticated encryption (AE), Proxmox Backup Server ensures that protecting your most valuable data is quick and effortless. With strong encryption and methods of ensuring data integrity, backing up data is safe, even to targets which are not fully trusted. Moreover, the available range of access control options means that you can offer a lot of flexibility for users, while retaining tight control of the system. Proxmox Backup Server is easy to manage, offering both command line and web-based user interfaces, and is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (GNU AGPL, v3).

A big THANK YOU to our community! We are really grateful for all the support and feedback, all of you who were testing, bug reporting and patch submitting - thank you so much, you are fantastic!

MAIN FEATURES
  • Based on Debian Buster 10.6, with Linux kernel version 5.4 (LTS)
  • ZFS 0.8.4
  • Proxmox VE is fully supported - easily backup VMs (supporting QEMU dirty bitmaps) and containers.
  • Deduplication - avoids redundancy and minimizes the storage space used.
  • Incremental backups - Reading and sending only the changes reduces the storage and network impact.
  • Ultra-fast Zstandard compression - compress several gigabytes per second.
  • Data integrity with SHA-256 checksum algorithm - for accuracy and consistency of your backups.
  • Remote synchronization across multiple remote locations
  • Encryption on client-side with AES-256 in Galois/Counter mode - very high performance on modern hardware.
  • Easy management with web-based user interface & CLI
  • Maintenance task scheduling – Advanced scheduling of maintenance tasks, with fine-grained control.
  • Support Subscriptions from your Proxmox team
  • Open-source license: GNU AGPL, v3

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Can I upgrade my beta installation?
A: Yes, just upgrade to latest packages with apt or GUI and the beta repo will be removed automatically. Make sure you got a subscription to get upcoming stable updates (or configure pbs-no-subscription if you do not want to subscribe).

Q: How does this integrate into Proxmox VE?
A: Just add a Proxmox Backup Server datastore as a new storage target in your Proxmox VE. Make sure that you have at least pve-manager 6.2-9 installed, the upcoming Proxmox VE 6.3 will get further improvements.

Q: What will happen with the existing Proxmox VE backup tool (vzdump)?
A: You can still use vzdump. The new backup is an additional but very powerful way to backup and restore your VMs and containers.

Q: Can I already back up my other Debian servers (file backup agent)?
A: Yes, just install the Proxmox Backup Client, see https://pbs.proxmox.com/docs/installation.html#install-proxmox-backup-client-on-debian

Q: Are there already backup agents for other distributions?
A: There are none packaged yet, work in progress.

Q: Is there any recommended server hardware for the Proxmox Backup Server?
A: We recommend using enterprise-grade server hardware components, with enough storage for your backup needs. The backup server should be in the same datacenter as your Proxmox VE hosts, see https://pbs.proxmox.com/docs/installation.html#recommended-server-system-requirements

Q: Where can I get more information about upcoming features?
A: Follow the announcement forum and pbs-devel mailing list https://lists.proxmox.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pbs-devel, and subscribe to our newsletter https://www.proxmox.com/news

Congrats on the 1.0 release!
Is it supported to upgrade from 0.9.x to 1.0? I did a quick look but didn't see any information about is.

Read the FAQ in the first post of this thread, so Yes.

Great news and congrats on the release :)

We're excited to try this out..

Quick question - as regards datastore options: I'm assuming it's possible to attach NFS mounts, CephFS,RBD etc. as datastore options for PBS? Or must it only be local direct-attached storage?

We'll start playing with the stable release over the next few days..

That is possible, you can specify a path to where the datastore is. You will probably get better results with local storage than with NFS though. Usually faster :)

As mentioned, yes it is possible, but it would be good if the remote filesystem understands setting user/group IDs, all files in the datastore path are owned by the backup user (normally UID/GID 34), so that either the filesystems needs to support setting that, or you need to explicitly mount it as that user.

But yes, in general we recommend using local attached storage - it avoids additional components which reduces risks and does not need multi gigabit links to be fast (plus avoids sending the backup traffic over a network twice, once from the client to PBS, and the second time from PBS to a NAS). That said, there are setups with a dedicated ceph for backup/archive storage, or fast NAS with good connection - so there are definitively situations where it can be OK to use it that way; but we still recommend local storage, e.g. ZFS, so if in doubt go for that.

Seems a bit steep to be honest, as a (standard) subscriber to proxmox on 3 nodes I was intending on subscribing to pbs but as it stands I'll take my chances with the no subscription option.
I have same thoughts here, I would like to support the pbs solution with a subscription, but this will be above my budget.
Nevertheless congratulations with a great product!

Only the community pricing of PBS vs the PVE prices...

PBS: 449/year vs PVE: 85/year
You missed to tell that the 85 is per CPU Socket/Server and you probably run many. A typical Proxmox user is running Proxmox VE on many servers and sockets - we have customers with 100+ - but will need just a few Backup Servers (most deployments will run just one or two).

Properly configured, a single Backup Server can hosts hundreds of TB of data, if you add a second one in a remote location with replication, you are perfectly protected from data loss. Tape archive support will follow (see https://pbs.proxmox.com/wiki/index.php/Roadmap).

I can totally understand the price asked and I think it is justified with what tom said. 6 sockets and you are at that price. For personal projects it is indeed too steep, but for business it is actually quite reasonable, not to say cheap. Hard to find a middle ground here, but I think this is the right approach as a company.

As a private home user I want a backup but am o.k. with minor bugs <- so no money, no enterprise repository...

For the company I want a working, stable solution with manufacturer support. Test system using a community license, Production system Basic and up...

Will tape support include support for tape libraries?

This could be massive in the backup market, as there are not many players, and only 2 real Open Source players (Amanda and Bacula).

Will be keeping an eye on the development of this one.
