Hello,
i’m sorry because my English isn’t the best. I hope you can understand my problem.

I use a Proxmox VE 3.1 Server for virtualisation. (Debian, 2 x 2 TB HDD Soft-RAID1)

I’ve bought a NAS for backups. This NAS can only connect with SAMBA.
I’ve create a Directory and mount the Share at the Server. When i’ve connect via SSH and put a file into the folder, i can see it. So the mounted Share is available.
The Web-GUI is showing the right size for the backup storage.
But when i’m trying to run a Backup, it shows following message and finished with errors:

Code:
[FONT=Lucida Grande]INFO: starting new backup job: vzdump 100 --remove 0 --mode snapshot --compress lzo --storage backup-nas --node root-srv[/FONT]

[FONT=Lucida Grande]INFO: Backup job finished with errors[/FONT]
[FONT=Lucida Grande]TASK ERROR: job errors[/FONT]

Local Backups are finished without errors. My Server is up-to-date.

Do you have any idea, where the problem is? And how i can solve it?
(without extra money)

I’ve searched many times, but i don’t finde the answer of my question. So this post is my last chance. ;)

Thank you very much!!!

Re: Proxmox - Backup doesn't work - Samba Share (... query-backup failed - got timeou

Does it work when you backup to local storage?

Re: Proxmox - Backup doesn't work - Samba Share (... query-backup failed - got timeou

Try with default debian kernel if you don't use openvz. Current .32 kernel have issues with cifs.

Re: Proxmox - Backup doesn't work - Samba Share (... query-backup failed - got timeou

Yes, backups to local storage finished without problems.
I can't use the default debian kernel, because i need openvz.
Is there any other chance?

Thanks for the answers.

Re: Proxmox - Backup doesn't work - Samba Share (... query-backup failed - got timeou

Hey,
thank you very much. I'm sorry, but can you explain me how i can change the kernel without problems? Can i do this remotely, so when i've changed the kernel it boots automatic the right one? (During installation i've selected the pve-kernel manual. But when i've update the kernel via Web-GUI i don't need to do this.) Do i need to write the grub boot loader into sdb manual when i'm changing the kernel? (General Question: How do i install the grub boot loader in the right way to boot from the second HDD without the first one? At the moment i do this when i have installed debian with RAID1: grub-install /dev/sdb , update-grub and initramfs)
Which version is better? Is it safer when i use the current default debian kernel (I need to reinstall it too, because i've remove it during installation) and i can only use kvm. Or is it saver to use the older proxmox-kernel? (System stability / security)

Thank you very much!

fr1000

-----

Now i've installed the new kernel via

apt-get install linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64

and a reboot. The server is up *uff... happy* :)
Because it's a new kernel as 2.6, grub choose this during boot.
Do i need to install grub on the second HDD (sdb) when i change the configuration? It's very important to know, because i can't get physical access to the server for the next time. (I think i don't need to do, but i'm not sure.)
Do i have to look at important things when i do updates? Or can i update it like starting with pve-kernel?

I will now try to make Backups and when i've new informations. I will post it here.

So,
now the Backup is running. (156GB / ca. 2,5h). Thats okay. But now i've a new problem. :/ I can't restore the Image because i get the following error after 2 - 3 sec :
Code:
[COLOR=#000000][FONT=tahoma]TASK ERROR: command 'lzop -d -c /mnt/VMBackups/dump/vzdump-qemu-100-2014_03_05-16_39_09.vma.lzo|vma extract -v -r /var/tmp/vzdumptmp7349.fifo - /var/tmp/vzdumptmp7349' failed: command '/usr/bin/qemu-img create -o 'preallocation=metadata' -f qcow2 /var/lib/vz/images/101/vm-101-disk-2.qcow2 996147200K' failed: got timeout[/FONT][/COLOR]

Can anyone help me? I will be crazy... and i don't know what i can do :confused: :(

Here is my running paket configuration:

Re: Proxmox - Backup doesn't work - Samba Share (... query-backup failed - got timeou

that is not a proxmox kernel...

afaik the latest BETA pve kernel is 3.10
see http://forum.proxmox.com/threads/17690-Beta-packages-for-Proxmox-VE-3-2-pvetest

Marco

Yes, because rahman had say that i can use the default debian kernel, if i don't use openvz. And with this kernel, Backup to smb share is running.
Is it better to use the pvetest-kernel? The system need to run stable.
Or is it better when i use an older pve-kernel?(And which one do i need. I didn't find the right oder pve-kernel with smb support.)
At both solutions, i don't know how to boot from this "older" kernel. Because i can only get access via SSH the next time and grub selecting the newest kernel to boot automatically. Can you explain what i can do?

Thanks!

Re: Proxmox - Backup doesn't work - Samba Share (... query-backup failed - got timeou

The system need to run stable.

so, use stable resources.
stable pve release, stable pve kernels, recommended resources (eg: local nfs shared storage, not samba)

imho, either you adapt to pve, or get other environments (eg: ovirt, if you don't need openvz)

Re: Proxmox - Backup doesn't work - Samba Share (... query-backup failed - got timeou

Hmm... i don't want to use other environments. My problem is, that my NAS can only samba and i've not the money to buy a new one.
I think there must be a solution for this problem?! (I don't think i'm the only one with this problem.)
Is there a security risk, if i use an older stable pve-kernel with smb support? I think that will be a solution for the moment. And when a new kernel update is available i can use this one.
Can you tell me what i need to do?

you need to get more money. seriously. get some decent hardware, use the same disk and install linux, export nfs shares... or use local storage.

to get other kernels, I guess you could:
# aptitude search pve-kernel
then install the one you want

of course this depends on used pve repositories

Re: Proxmox - Backup doesn't work - Samba Share (... query-backup failed - got timeou

Hello,
i've installed the pve-kernel and update the System.
And now i've patched my NAS and so i have a NFS Server. I've connect the NFS Share to Proxmox and Backups run without errors.
But i still have the problem, that i can't roll back the Snapshots. I've get the following error:

Code:
[COLOR=#000000][FONT=tahoma]estore vma archive: lzop -d -c /mnt/pve/backup-nfs/dump/vzdump-qemu-100-2014_03_12-16_52_16.vma.lzo|vma extract -v -r /var/tmp/vzdumptmp2786.fifo - /var/tmp/vzdumptmp2786[/FONT][/COLOR]

[/FONT][/COLOR]

And i use an nfs-share and the newest pve-kernel.
Can you tell me, how i can solve the problem?

Re: Proxmox - Backup doesn't work - Samba Share (... query-backup failed - got timeou

should work, you got a timeout so check your NFS server settings, permissions and network.

Re: Proxmox - Backup doesn't work - Samba Share (... query-backup failed - got timeou

Hey,
i've tested the restore process with a local backup and get the same ERROR:
Code:
[COLOR=#000000][FONT=tahoma]restore vma archive: lzop -d -c /var/lib/vz/backups/dump/vzdump-qemu-100-2013_12_16-21_13_41.vma.lzo|vma extract -v -r /var/tmp/vzdumptmp33931.fifo - /var/tmp/vzdumptmp33931[/FONT][/COLOR]

And when i use a backup without compression, i will get this ERROR:

Code:
[COLOR=#000000][FONT=tahoma]restore vma archive: vma extract -v -r /var/tmp/vzdumptmp33873.fifo /mnt/pve/backup-nfs/dump/vzdump-qemu-100-2014_03_20-21_10_11.vma /var/tmp/vzdumptmp33873[/FONT][/COLOR]

So i don't think it's a network problem.

Do you have any ideas?

Re: Proxmox - Backup doesn't work - Samba Share (... query-backup failed - got timeou

Seems you use a SATA drive. Please can you test using IDE or VIRTIO instead?

Can i change it at an existing machine?

Re: Proxmox - Backup doesn't work - Samba Share (... query-backup failed - got timeou

Hello,
now i've create a new VM for testing with 950GB HDD (VMDK) and VIRTIO. I've not start the VM. Just take a backup. (I wondering about the long backuptime. Proxmox Backup the complete 950GB HDD but the real size is only 64MB. Is this normal?) And when i restore it.. it runs. I will make some more tests.
Here is the configuration of my VM where the Backup failed:

Bildschirmfoto 2014-03-22 um 22.14.59.png

Is there anyone how want to try a backup with this configuration? Please try it.

EDIT:
When i use VMDK Format. The restoring process take very, very, very much time. So i've tested the raw format. I think this is the best, because it is faster. I think there is a problem with restoring a qcow2 based VM. Can anyone reproduce it?
I will use the raw format in the future and hope that this is working.

Thank you very much!
