Possible VA's

maybe a networkmonitor like "nagios" !?!

hi,
yes, this would be cool. there are many software projects around, do you prefer one project?

Just to mention, I setup a small cacti monitoring server about 2 years ago running inside a standard openvz CentOS 4.X minimal vhost container, and it worked like a charm. I can recommend this as a nice clean (snmp based) monitoring solution that works well inside the VZ container environment..

I do use cacti and nagios for our purposes and I am quite satisfied. I honestly have looked at other software that serves similar purposes and haven't found anything I would prefer to switch to.

Since the VAs are usually nicely-polished get-right-down-to-business pre-installed software packages, we should figure out a decent PHP-based nagios configurator to include. Cacti is already pretty fancy in that regard and seems to need no additional standard software to make it a fairly complete ready-to-start solution.

My template wishlist:
- Zarafa A really excellent linux alternative to Exchange that I prefer to Zimbra or Scalix
- ZenOs monitoring
- Webmin comes in handy!
- Bluequartz or other free hostingpanel
- Cpanel ?

All applications that will lure hostingproviders ;)

I would like to see a few: (sorted by relevance)

  • AsteriskNow for OpenVZ
  • Nagios + Centreon for Network Monitoring

I tested the fedora ones. They don't work properly.

The Gentoo community snapshot has some issues with df -h etc. Also, not good enough to run into production.

I would like to see:
Zenoss: http://www.zenoss.com/
OCSI setup with GLPI: http://www.ocsinventory-ng.org/ http://www.glpi-project.org/spip.php?lang=en
OpenMeetings: http://code.google.com/p/openmeetings/

Also is it possible to have KVM machines as templates? So far I have only seen OpenVZ ones...

thanks for suggestions. zenoss is quite interesting.
OCSI and GLPI: I do not know these projects in detail - why do you need GLPI on top? can you explain this setup?
OpenMeetings: this is beta software with no release in 2008 - whats the reason behind?

KVM: currently we do not have KVM appliances as using openvz for Linux servers is the better choice - due to the nature of openvz you can preconfigure and manage much better from the host. but you can google around, there are already some KVM appliances - or just convert appliances from the market leader to KVM, see http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Migration_of_servers_to_Proxmox_VE

Virtual Appliances ProxMox VAP's for short

Monitoring:

  • GroundWork Monitor - (open source monitoring platform includes nagios and a really nice gi to make mgmt. easier)
  • Pandora FMS - Open Source Monitoring
  • Cacti - mrtg and rrdtool on steriods
  • Netflow Appliance: similar to this one: http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/293

Firewall & Routing

  • vYatta - the Dawn of Open Source Routing
  • pfSense - eat your heart out PIX

Communications:

  • PBXinaFlash.com Voip Server (Open Source)
  • TrixBox

System Administration:

Hosting VPS'

  • cPanel OvenVZ Image
  • VHCS.net (Open Source)
Misc / Management

  • SugarCRM
Hope that helps :)

If there is a simple method to convert these - I would be willing to assist.

:p

OCSI allows for real time inventory of hardware and software assets, when you tie in GLPI you get history ability plus basic helpdesk/ticket tracking abilities. I suggested them as an alliance merely because it is a bit difficult for a novice user to build them together, a pre built appliance I think would greatly ease deployment.

OpenMeetings: I dunno where you are seeing no releases this year, the last release was in May. Yes it is still beta, but it's core functionality is quite stable, and it is under active developement. There is a vmware appliance already if you want to see it in action. If it is too early keep an eye on it then, I think this will be a popular project in the future as there are few open source alternatives.
