Planning a Proxmox Setup: Home Assistant OS, Pi-hole, Nextcloud, Game Servers & Shared Storage

Hey everyone,

I’m pretty new to all this and planning to run Home Assistant on my mini PC.
Originally, I was going to install it on Ubuntu Server, but I’ve since learned that Home Assistant OS is probably the better choice because of the add-ons.

So that makes my original plan kind of pointless. I’ve already spent quite a bit of time learning about the Ubuntu setup and could’ve made it work, but now I’m thinking of starting fresh with Proxmox instead.

Here’s what I’d like to run alongside Home Assistant OS:

  • Pi-hole or AdGuard
  • Minecraft server (and maybe other game servers later)
  • Photo management with Nextcloud or Immich
  • Some sort of shared storage that’s accessible from both Windows and Linux

(If you’ve got any “must-have” suggestions for other services or tools to run, I’m all ears!)

Would this setup make sense with Proxmox?
Is it even practical to run all this on one machine, or am I overcomplicating things?

Before I dive deeper into learning Proxmox, I just wanted to get some quick feedback.
Anything important I should watch out for?

Specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen™ 7 7730U (8 cores / 16 threads)
  • RAM: 2×16 GB DDR4
  • Storage: 1× M.2 SSD (4 TB)

Thanks in advance for your help!

Just stumbled upon this brainstorming my own setup, I thought i'd point out(probably too late to change) that ryzen won't really do well transcoding if you do decide to do a media server, though you could maybe find an intel arc card cheap to handle it.

That is not true, not ;lately anywhy. They are not as good as Intel or NVidia, but that doesn't mean that it won't work.

The writer states that it's a mini PC, so unless it can support an external eGPU that won't help.

Hi Basti2803,

maybe late but I post my point of view:

It make sense to use Proxmox for all these services in one HW.

1. HW setup
6GB Proxmox with ZFS
1GB Pi-Hole, AdGuard
1GB Nextcloud VM / 4GB Immich
4GB shared storage (I recommend OMV)
2GB Home Assistant OS
12GB Minecrat server

So RAM is enough for now. CPU should be enough too. Recount for another game server RAM and CPU requirements.
Disk space depends on your data needs.

I strongly recommend you add second drive and create ZFS RAID. This make your system more durable. If you not have second NVMe slot on your MB you can add PCIe adapter for second NVMe drive. Best option is to not have drives from same serie.

2. Is Proxmox good solution
Joining all this services in one system will be quite difficult, complex for maintenance, headache for security and nightmare for fixing.
Docker is an option, either in Proxmox containers or Proxmox VMs. Proxmox VMs are easiest to manage with accaptable performance overhead. Using VMs is alse more safe in security thinking than another configuration.
In this case I prefer Proxmox VMs. Final setup depends on your technical preference and skills.

3. Anythin else important - Backup
Even you add second drive and create ZFS RAID I recomend to backup most important data to another system. RAID make system more durable not indestructive.

4.Anythin else important - Security
You are planning quite complex setup with public access. Any system with public acess is target for atakers. Did you think about security? User access rights? A good router with firewall and security updates, IPS/IDS system.

I hope this helps you.
