Hi,
I'm new to both PBS and ZFS and I ordered an M720Q (Core i3-8100T, 16GB DDR4, 1 NVME, 1 SATA SSDs) tiny computer off eBAY planning to use it to back up my Proxmox VE as well as a couple of laptops and desktops. But as I've searched the web and gone back and forth with Gemini and Grok I'm beginning to think I may have made a mistake. Since the m720 only has 2 internal sata ports I was planning to add storage via external USB HDDS or NAS HDDs via NFS mount. But it seems that ZFS over USB, with consumer drives, is unlikely to work. At the same time 16gb ram seems tight. With future proofing, I have about 6TB of data all around that I'd like to back up. With RAID mirroring I have HDDs for this but not ssds and my budget is screaming. I do have some consumer SSDs, Samsung EVO Plus 2TB nvme, and about 2TB of Inland Professional and Crucial BX500s. I also have a Zygnel NAS326.
So my options appear to be 1. Connect my drives via USB to the M720, format with ZFS and use a "Special Device" on the nvme. Hope for the best. 2. Connect USB HDDs to NAS mount via NFS ON M720. No ZFS? 3. Abandon PBS use something else e.g Borg Backup. I want to use PBS so if anybody can give me some suggestions as to how I can make this work, it'll be greatly appreciated.
