So I was pveceph purge-ing my ceph, nuking the storage to freshly install Quincy.

But this left dpkg in a somewhat broken state

If I now try to upgrade I get following errors.

I did this for one host, but I'd like to double check if I can proceed with the next hosts

Starting system upgrade: apt-get dist-upgrade
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

System not fully up to date (found 35 new packages)

starting shell

Configuration file '/etc/vzdump.conf'
==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.
==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : start a shell to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.

the logs are missing the error - it starts with the symptom (dpkg interrupted)..

Yeah I do not have it.

when I ran pveceph purge it stated I have to run dpkg --configure -a

I am currently not too concerned.

I just want to know if this is expected behavior and whether I should proceed.

As far as I can see, without dpkg --configure -a I will not be able to run apt whatsoever.
So I just want to know if I broke something. I got suspicious, when it generated kernels and boot entries

that is normal if an "apt" call was interrupted before it completed all phases of package changes (what happens behind the scene is rather complicated). the question is why apt was interrupted in the first place. are you sure it was "pveceph purge" that was the original cause? I don't think that even installs/removes/updates any packages.. maybe the installation of quincy was what got interrupted? or an upgrade that you did before?

maybe you could check /var/log/apt/term.log for entries on that day and post them here?

So I used a script from the forum
Code:
rm -rf /etc/systemd/system/ceph*
killall -9 ceph-mon ceph-mgr ceph-mds
rm -rf /var/lib/ceph/mon/ /var/lib/ceph/mgr/ /var/lib/ceph/mds/
pveceph purge
apt -y purge ceph-mon ceph-osd ceph-mgr ceph-mds
rm /etc/init.d/ceph
maybe the error occurred on apt -y purge ceph-mon etc.

the Log in question is empty for 4 hosts, on the fifth it contains only things regarding the quincy upgrade

(END)

please understand I really only want to know whether I can proceed, or if I have a serious problem.

In the end all I wanted was to fully delete Ceph (now GUI shows it's not initialized) so I want to upgrade to 17.2 and reinitalize ceph later with new disks on 17.2
But if I accidentally broke something kernelwise, I would have to reinstall the nodes and the cluster.

EDIT: history.log is empty too.
EDIT2: I probably called apt purge too early since I still had an OSD left. maybe this prevented the uninstallment.

no, I think you can proceed. the kernel messages were just because part of the original (interrupted) APT invocation also queued a regeneration of the initramfs/ESP, that was then done when you told dpkg to finish.
