I want to build a mips64 vm in order to build sources for my octeon based edgemax router.

Is this possible with proxmox?

If somebody could point me to some docs or offer some advice I'd be most thankful.

Many Thanks,
Rob.

It has been a while since I did any embedded development.

I think one way ProxmoxVE can assist you in this is running a VM with your choice of (cross)compiler suite for Octeon/MIP64 architecture.
Or a VM to run emulator/SDK software provided by Cavium for Octeon/MIPS64 development.

Thanks swartz for your reply. I've not seen any mips64 VMs.
That would be ideal since the makefiles usually don't allow for cross compiles and I could just compile natively.

Up to this point I use a spare device to compile what I need albeit much more slowly than would be possible on a VM.

Either way I don't even know that proxmox can emulate a mips64 environment. Is this possible?

I think you misunderstood.

What I suggested is Proxmox can run a Windows/Linux VM with dev-toolset such as (cross)compilers for MIPS64. You would then still need to move the binaries to the target devices.

Alternatively, I assume, Cavium must provide some kind of an SDK which may include a software emulator. Chances are this software is for Windows. You can have a VM with this software running on Windows. Or multiple VMs if you need different versions of said software.

Thanks for the clarification swartz. I'm definitely interested in the emulator path rather than cross compiling.

Well then, Proxmox (and other virtualization solutions) can assist you in running Windows/Linux as a deployment platform for this software.
However, the emulator or SDK software is something that is obtained Cavium. Proxmox can't help you there.
