Hi guys, Hope you're good.
I wanted to ask about the migration process of virtual machines in proxmox 7 to proxmox 4.
I've been using proxmox for the last 2 months and There are some servers in proxmox 4 which i'd be nice that I have all together.
If you can give me a tip about how to proceed.
I have a ubuntu 14.04 server in proxmox 7. It has a couple of applications and I want it to be in proxmox 4 with the others so we can deploy a fast linux machine.

Just so that I understand you correctly, you want to migrate VMs running on VE 7.x to a host running 4.4? I'm not sure if this is good idea. I'd suggest upgrading to a recent version of Proxmox VE first before you attempt any migrations.

Hi Lukas, thanks for your answer. And yes, I want to migrate a virtual machine from a higher version to an old version. I want to try to join them so I have them all of them. Even if, something breaks, I don't mind, I'd like to do it.

Hi,
as @l.wagner said, there are very likely settings in the configuration that the old host does not understand, so you'd need to manually adapt the configuration. But it's also a very bad idea from a security perspective: you won't get any updates for 4.4 and the server will be vulnerable!

Why not go in the other direction and move from old to new?

yeah, actually it's not a good idea, but i'd like to try and configure and backup my VMs in the older configs.

Hi Fiona, thanks for your reply.
I'd like to know how can I manually configure all the changes? Or should I get into the console and do it somewhere.
I'm kind of new to proxmox and I'm doing some experiments on virtualizations.

This is what I've done:
I created a VM in proxmox 7.2. A Ubuntu machine.
I converted it into a template. I turned the template into a backup.
Then, I transferred that "backup" into the proxmox 4.4.
I then restored it. And what happened was that, the machine needed a Disk image.
Ok, I then upload an ISO of Ubuntu. Which I thought it'd be ready but unfortunatly,
It just booted the Ubuntu Installation. It didn't preserve the configs and files I had in the ubuntu installed in to 7.2 proxmox.
What I would like is that I can have all the exact files and programs.
For example, I have a python 3.2 in ubuntu in proxmox 7.2
I'd like to have that machine in proxmox 4.4.
You've warned me that It's possible some configurations have to be done manually And I would like to know where I can do that configuration and what files I need in the 4.4 version.

thanks in advance for your help and reading me.

Well you need to get rid of all settings the old instance doesn't know about. I still think this is a very bad idea ;)

The disk image should've been included in the backup? Well, maybe 4.4 isn't able to restore it at all.

I don't know what these settings are.
