In May 2018 the Ceph community conducted a user survey which was now made public and has some really encouraging results for us to see. 342 people worldwide responded to the survey.

The study found
  • 33,55% use Proxmox VE as platform.
  • 23,82% use Proxmox VE as management and monitoring tool for Ceph being the fourth most popular management and monitoring tool after Ceph-mgr dashboard, Grafana (custom) and Nagios/Icinga.
  • 56% of the users have up to 10 nodes in their Ceph cluster, and 47% operate 2-5 clusters in total.
  • 83% of the users are satisfied or extremely satisfied with the Ceph technology overall.
What people like most about Ceph, the massively-scalable, software-defined storage system
  • Open Source (32,64%)
  • Scalability (30,86%)
  • Cost (13,65%)
Ceph was specifically designed as an optimal, massively-scalable, software-defined storage system for cloud infrastructure. Proxmox VE integrates Ceph since 2014, for more information see

Not surprised to see ProxmoxVE to heavily represented among all Ceph installations. Proxmox is one of the only virtualization environments that makes Ceph deployments reasonably easy. Well done to the Proxmox team.

+1 for this, all other ways of deploying ceph gives me the creeps..

We just set up two 7 node clusters with Proxmox/ceph to replace our old NAS systems in two locations.
Additionally we have two openSuSE Leap 15 nodes on each location as SMB/CIFS gateway for cephfs.
