Hello,

Given that ubuntu upstream is in process of phasing this kernel out, and we're already now spending considerable amount of engineering time to handled backporting (security) fixes on top of upstreams work, we decided to go through with the previously announced plan to end support for the 6.17-based kernel series at the end of July.

At the time of writing, still-supported kernel release series:
  • Kernel 6.8 for Proxmox VE 8 and other Debian Bookworm-based Proxmox project releases until end of August, after which those releases will be out of support too.
  • Kernel 7.0, the current default kernel for Proxmox VE 9 and all other Debian Trixie-based Proxmox project releases.

Thanks for the update.
We experience stability issues with kernel 7 that so far makes us stay away from it. If I enable the qemu agent on vms with gpu pass-through pvestatsd will eventually crash the host kernel as it will wrongly identify memory pages missing for random vdis. This locks up resources and I need to move vdi users to other guests on different hosts to reset the host to be able to recover it. As a quick workaround we disable qemu guest but I want to continue to use it, works fine on 6.17.

A second issue for us that still lingers with version 7 only is cpu idle management, last night again, one of my amd milan dual cpu boxes locked up with 32 threads reported locked. This I don't know how to workaround except going back to 6.17.
Until this issues are fixed we need a way to stay stable and also secure.

Any thoughts?

Do you happen to have a support subscription? Then your best way of action would be to file a support case for two reasons:

  • You have actually a guarantee that somebody from the Proxmox team will help you to solve your problem instead of hoping that some of the know-it-alls like me from the community have an idea
  • For decisions like the end of support the Proxmox team gauge the needs of their enterprise customers. So if more people report issues with a certain kernel not present in an older one it might be more likely that they will continue to support the old one if no other resolution is possible. For Kernel 6.17 that ship is propably sailed though but I would still expect that their support staff will be happen to find the root cause of your Kernel 7 troubles.

I have a community membership which I don't expect it to provide the same amount of effort. Do i have access to open tickets with a paid continuity access membership?
Nope, since you need at least a basic subscription for it. The community subscription gives you access to the enterprise repository and removes the nag screen, that's it. Community subscription doesn't contain any options for payed support, it's possible to upgrade it by paying the difference between community subscription and your prefered subscription with support options. For the available options and whether they might be willing to assist on a hourly rate you should contact office@proxmox.com

You can open a bugtracker ticket on https://bugzilla.proxmox.com/ though. There is no guarantee that it will be resolved but a staff members will at least notice and read it. On the forum their participation is more something of voluntary and best-effort work (it's the community forum after all, so for know-it-all like me ;) ) so they won't and can't notice everyting at the forum.
