Hi,

Having some lab experience with proxmox, but no experience with ceph/zfs, i would appreciate some help for my plans.

I would like to build a configuration with 2 rackservers and when there is budget, expand to 3 or 4 rack nodes in total. If I start with 2 nodes and ZFS replication, and when I have the 2 extra nodes, then switch to ceph.

I am looking at DELL R6415 . When i choose the sata/nvme chassis, There is no choice for the controller. I end up with a HBA330 controller.

As far as i have read in the forums, a HBA controller is good for CEPH/ZFS, but on which diks configuration we put proxmox OS?

Do I need to put this on a Dell BOSS controller in raid 1?

Another option is to choose the sata/sas chassis, then i can choose other controllers than HBA330, like the h330. On that controller there is a raid possibility. But is that one good for ceph?

Thank you for your insights!
appreciated,

Tom

You can install Proxmox on disks connected to the HBA. If you use the latest PVE version 6 and install it (preferably in UEFI mode) on ZFS you can select a RAID1 setup and select only the two disks for the OS. Then once it is up and running create the ZFS pools with the remaining disks to your liking.

This is valid if that server allows you to boot from disks connected to the HBA. I don't have any experience with that model.

Hi Aaron,

Thank you for your reply. I totally forgot the ZFS raid options. I will definately pick the HBA controller, which has SATA & NVME support. That is great. Your answer confirms that.

I will start with a ZFS 1 or 10 setup, with the possibility to migrate to ceph in the future.

Finally everything is falling into place.

Thanks again!

Regards,
Tom

Hi,

Be sure to configure your controller to act as JBOD so RAID is managed by software.

I think this is the preferred way to work.
