[SOLVED] is garbage collection needed on a remote sync system?

our remotes have much more disk usage [ 2x approx] then the source pbs system.

so i am running garbage collect for the 1ST time.

AFAIK the syncs have always been set to 'Remove Vanished' . How ever we have had some wrong configurations in the past , so i assume our issue with higher remote disk usage a post operator error.

question - when Remove Vanished is set should GC still be scheduled?
 
yes. remove vanished works like a regular remove - it will remove the snapshot metadata, but not the chunks. to remove the chunks, you need to run a garbage collection. even without 'remove vanished', it makes sense to run a garbage collection from time to time to collect stray chunks (e.g. from partial syncs, where the source removed a snapshot so the chunk is not needed anymore but it might have been stored on the remote end by a partial sync)
