Installing Proxmox v. 5.0 onto an External SSD

I have an iMac, with 16gb of memory and an I5 processor with USB 3. I want to install Proxmox onto an external SSD drive and make it bootable so that I can boot from this drive and run it without the overhead of another operating system. First of all is this possible? If so how would I accomplish this?

Proxmox VE is not designed or tested to run a iMacs, but test it and you will see.
 
Donald, did you ever get around to trying this out? I have an old iMac that I would like to repurpose and was hoping you could tell me if it worked out or not.
