I've and old HP ProLiant DL160 G6 server, my intention is use it for homelab, Its possible to install Proxmox in this hardware? any recommended version or advice? It has ESXi 5.1 installed with a few VMs, but I cant connect to it using Sphere Client or VMware Workstation, always an error! So, i think install Proxmox but im a noob

It has 32gb of RAM, 4tb and 2 Intel Xeon

Thankyou!!

Hello @ilu, welcome to the club.

You might just follow https://pve.proxmox.com/pve-docs/pve-admin-guide.html#chapter_installation

If you encounter problems try to describe your hardware more detailed. Then tell us
 • what you wanted to do (in that step)
 • what you did
 • what you expected
 • what happened instead
For all text output from a shell please use
...
("</>") tags - and include the actual command you typed in plus the full output.

The first step is to check the Xeon for "Intel VT/AMD-V capable CPU/motherboard for KVM full virtualization support" (from the link above). As you had ESXi running I am fairly sure that it will work with PVE :)

If you want to actually use the resulting system "for real" you might start thinking about redundancy, supplied by ZFS. If you "only" want to learn PVE that might be a future step - with a chance to need to start from scratch.

I would recommend the latter - the first build is never what a fresh user wants to build.
