Initial setup - web interface not accessible, possible network config issue

Hello dear Proxmox enthusiasts.

I am a fresh proxmox user and I just did my very first install.

Some background info:

- I rent a dedicated server from a datacenter on the other side of the world for me, so I don't have physical access to it.
- I have IPMI access with iKVM integrated, so I am able to mount images and access the remote console as if I'm sitting in front of it
- I received the usual network config stuff from my provider, such as usable IPs, default gateway, netmask.

Now, I used to have a windows server 2012 running on this box without issues, but I decided to get into proxmox so I could virtualize a few servers. I know some stuff about linux, mostly ubuntu, but I am in no way an expert. I have work extensively with Hyper-V but this has not prepared me at all for this.

My issue:

On a fresh install of Proxmox VE 3.1 through the IPMI, I am unable to access the web interface from my home computer. Pinging the public IP that I set up during the installation process yields no response. Pinging the default gateway works fine, so the physical infrastructure should be ok, also I was not having any issues with the windows OS that was on it until a few hours ago, so I have no reason to assume that my cable is unplugged.

Question: should I be able to access the web interface remotely or only when I'm on the same subnet as the server? I can access the server itself through my IPMI/KVMoverIP and the java console, but in my browser I cannot access https://[myip]:8006.

When checking with cat /etc/network/interfaces, the setup seems to be fairly regular, my public IP is in there, the default gateway is in place, as is the netmask (255.255.255.248).

I'm doing a fresh install right now, so I unfortunately can't list the details of the network at the moment, but I'd appreciate any help in the right direction.

Thank you kindly,
brez

Yes, that should work out of the box. What error do you get in the browser?

What OS/browser do you use? If possible, also try another browser.

Thank you for your responses, guys, I will try and answer you in more detail when the re-install has finished.

Are you saying that you are trying to access the WebGUI through the Public IP?
That's possible @dietmar?
Are there any firewalls in place?

As far as I know, there are no firewalls, this is an out-of-the-box install of proxmox. And, yes, I'm trying to use the public IP that I entered during the installation of proxmox.

Ping should also work. Can you access the node using ssh?

I will try this as soon as the re-install is finished and let you know.

I'm using google chrome on windows 7, I emptied my cache and deleted my cookies, also tried in incognito-mode but the result was the same:
Code:
Error code: ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT

run ifconfig from your KVM IPMI console.
Do NOT post the information here. Just verify the information is correct.
Since you are opening the WebGUI to the outside world, try to ping 8.8.8.8 from the KVM IPMI Console.
Also, do you have two public IP addresses? How are you able to access your IPMI publicly?

I started the reinstall but was unable to wait until it was finished, now with the reinstall done, I am strangely able to access the web interface. I did nothing different from the other two times, but now it seems to be working, I'm very surprised.

Thanks for your support, I will update this if something isn't right after all.

Ok, so I am installing proxmox on a second dedicated box and I am running into the same problem.

The symptoms:

1. No web interface on the ip that the proxmox console gives me
2. No connectivity inside the proxmox box itself: ping 8.8.8.8: dest host unreachable
3. Can't connect through SSH

I can only use the iKVM through the IPMI and access the console there as if I'm in front of the terminal.

I'm now thinking that it has something to do with the domain that I enter during the installation. I can't remember what domain I entered on my first server.

My question: what domain to I have to enter during the installation? My IP, gateway and netmask are all given to me by my provider, and that's never been an issue. I don't own a website that I can point to it, so I can't enter a TLD. I'm assuming that the domain/hostname I'm entering is wrong and is causing the connectivity issues. What should I enter in that field during the installation?

I already read that, thank you. If the answer was in there I would not have posted here.

I don't know what is meant by 'hostname' since whatever I enter doesn't work.

I still am unable to figure it out, I did 4 re-installs, the box has no connectivity at all.

Do I need to enter a domain name into the hostname, as in www.google.com but then obviously my domain? If so, do I need to have that domain point to the IP of the server? I'm utterly confused here, thank you for your assistance.

I checked etc/network/interfaces on both machines, both return an identical setup except for the respective addresses, but only one of the boxes has connectivity, so it's not that.

Since I'm using a java iKVM console I can't see the full return of ifconfig, but it looks to be set up the same on both machines. I'm still wondering if I need to 'forward' the hostname (I picked xxx.domainfromafriend.com) to the box or not and, if so, why?

It doesn't matter what you input for domain. A domain name has nothing to do with IP connectivity. Your problem lies in the network config, not the hostname.
