WinXP uses 24bit color depth by default. When you connect via VNC you normally get all 24bit if you client can display it.

How do you observe the color depth?

you can also use "standard vga" graphic card adapter instead of the default (cirrus logic).

you need to power off and start again your windows VM. now you can set very high resolution and also 32-bit graphics.

RDP color depth is an RDP viewer options. Just configure 32bit before you connect.

Open up the Registry Editor (Start -> Run -> regedit) and found HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp and change colordepth from 3 to 4 and reboot Windows.
