How migrate from IBM Tivoli / Spectrum protect to PBS?

Hi,
Does anyone have experience migrating existing backups from IBM Tivoli TSM/Spectrum Protect to Proxmox Backup Server?

I'm looking at migrating TSM backups on tapes to PBS backups on tapes and NFS backends, while PBS takes over the current backup load.
I'm also looking at ways to migrate backup policy definitions such that, on one hand I don't have to recreate them all in PBS by hand, and secondly and ideally, associate old migrated backups with ongoing such that they continue, rather then have two sets of distinct backups. If possible.
Thank you.

Hi,

PBS using a different backup format, so 'migration' if mean real migration is not possible.
Only replacing the old backup infrastructure by PBS.
Anyway it will be two datasets, PBS can't work with TSM backups and vice versa.
But if it's really needed you could recover from TSM then do a backup of the recovered by PBS (not sure that is what you looking for).
Regarding tape backups, note that PBS (as probably any of backup software) can't work correct with the tape device which is managed by other backup software.

So it's pretty much as I figured:
1) set current backups to be run by PBS instead
2) make full restores from TSM (what is not in current) and then send them to backup in PBS
3) have tape devices managed by PBS directly - well, this surely was a given. (assuming I have a fresh load of tapes or don't mind erasing existing, otherwise (2) with a tranzit storage probably)

So nothing known to smooth the change. But I was kinda expecting.

Thank you.

I am just now seeing this but thought I would share some information since I have extensive experience with Spectrum Protect. SP does not back up data in a native file format and there is no officially supported way to migrate from SP to PBS. Files backed up to SP cannot be browsed since they are chunked into either containers, disk volumes, or tape volumes. If this is for a home lab be aware that SP is not user friendly and can be difficult to learn for new individuals. If your looking for enterprise class backups for Proxmox Veeam currently supports it and Cohesity is supposed to be supporting it sometime this year.

From having used TSM in a previous life, *DO NOT* remove your TSM installation if you want any hope of restoring a TSM backup.

The database is kept on the installation as to where to reach / find any data stored on the tapes. If this is lost, you will not be able to restore anything from your TSM era.

A long time ago, my TSM database was stored on a RAID5 which failed - and so did the access to restore anything from the tapes.
