Hi all!

We just released new packages, introducing High Availability for Proxmox VE 2.0 (beta). Just run "aptitude update && aptitude full-upgrade" to update from a previous beta.

I also started to create video tutorials, published on our YouTube channel - including a short demo of HA - http://www.youtube.com/user/ProxmoxVE

As always, a big Thank-you to our active community for all feedback, testing, bug reporting and patch submissions!!!

New Features

- High Availability support for KVM guests and OpenVZ containers
  • resource agents for KVM and OpenVZ
  • GUI for managing KVM and OpenVZ HA settings
  • New "Datacenter" summary page, showing the cluster status (incl. HA status)
- New Wiki articles, dealing with HA
- New Kernel
  • Based on vzkernel-2.6.32-042stab045.1.src.rpm
- Countless small bug fixes and improvements

Thanks for the update. I ran aptitude update then full upgrade as suggested and ran in to a bit of a problem on my test machine.

aptitude update gave me an error I don't think is too troubling:

"Fetched 1,672 B in 7s (237 B/s)
W: GPG error: http://ftp.us.debian.org squeeze Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG AED4B06F473041FA Debian Archive Automatic Signing Key (6.0/squeeze) <ftpmaster@debian.org>"

aptitude full-upgrade had me confirm the removal of a few packages and the intallation/update of others but ended with the following error:

"Err http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze/main libxml-parser-perl amd64 2.36-1.1+b1
404 Not Found [IP: 128.30.2.36 80]
E: Failed to fetch http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dis...d64/libxml-parser-perl_2.36-1.1+b1_amd64.deb: 404 Not Found [IP: 128.30.2.36 80]"

Rebooted the box and now apache fails to start.

Here is the apache error log output:

[Fri Dec 23 17:48:06 2011] [error] Can't locate /usr/share/pve-manager/startup.pl in @INC (@INC contains: /etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.10.1 /usr/local/share/perl/5.10.1 /usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.10 /usr/share/perl/5.10 /usr/local/lib/site_perl . /etc/apache2) at (eval 2) line 1.\n
[Fri Dec 23 17:48:06 2011] [error] Can't load Perl file: /usr/share/pve-manager/startup.pl for server localhost:8006, exiting...

Poking around in the directories shows that "/usr/share/pve-manager" does not exist.

Dear all,

I am a bit confused about fencing. It states it is a must for proxmox HA to work. Is this true?, is not there any possibility to configure it through software?.

I am totally agnostic about fencing technologies... could you recommend me any APC Fencing-capable model as cheap as possible?.

Also, is it really required to use 3 nodes on an HA scenario?. I remember it was also a must in first XenServer implementations, but this is no longer true...

Regards,

Jose.

Yes, you need a hardware based fencing method.

IMHO, "as cheap as possible" is the wrong way to go if you want HA!

Is iLO a valid method?, Can hardware fencing be done without hard stopping the other machine?. I mean, is there any way to force its disconnection from the network instead of "pulling" the power connector?.

I know, I know, we are just trying to build a test-bed for a proof of concept before we validate the system for reliability.

Best whishes.

Great news! As I understand, IPMI management boards can also be used as fencing devices. Too bad my test cluster doesn't have IPMI, only the production one.

The question I've got so far is "what if there are several fencing devices?" - i.e. each server has its own IPMI/iLo/DRAC card. Or even more interesting: each server is connected to two different PDUs. Are these combinations possible?

it should be possible to use several fence devices, also using two different pdu´s should work.

Hi,
I see that for HA there is a minimum of 3 nodes.
Is it planned to have minimum 2 nodes and maybe a quorum device ?

Thx.

yes, if you use a qdisk you can run a two node cluster. we will document a two node setup in the wiki as soon as possible.

Hello everybody

It's possible to have a 2-node cluster setup with HA, using OpenVZ containers on top of LVM, with the new proxmox storage model (DRBD in primary/primary mode), leaving the locking mechanism of LV's (each container in one LV) with proxmox?

PS: Maybe i'm asking too late for a xmas miracle... XD

very very interesting. We are testing now and we would like to use it for our servers ... when do you think you will release the first version?

Will it be possible to migrate 1.9 to 2.0 or will it need a clean install? Would it be 'save' to use the Beta for a production server?

Same issue here a week later.
See below, can figure out how to delete this reply.

I have the same issue and its a week later.

#service apache2 restart

Warning: DocumentRoot [/usr/share/pve-manager/root] does not exist
Action 'start' failed.
The Apache error log may have more information.
failed!
