Help with RAID passthrough to VM

Hello!

I just installed proxmox and ran my first 2 vms on a mini PC!

On my old setup, I used an rpi with an SSD dock with a couple of SSDs set up in RAID5 (this is my live environment, i have backups).

I was wondering if I could get some advice on what would be best way to use/pass the raid volume to proxmox vm

- Mount using mdadm on host (pve) and pass the mount to the vm
- Pass block devices in /dev/ to vm and mount using mdadm within the vm
- something else? i'm not sure if there is a proxmox way to do it better

Ideally, I would just use this array and not have to rebuild it somehow. Any advice would be super appreciated, thank you!

PVE isn't supporting mdadm raid (but its working fine with some special case exceptions where it might break your array).

- Mount using mdadm on host (pve) and pass the mount to the vm
- Pass block devices in /dev/ to vm and mount using mdadm within the vm

Both should work. But keep in mind that a VM won't directly access the real physical disks but is still working with virtual dual disks if you don't passthrough the entire raid controller.

When you mention that PVE doesn't support it, did you mean proxmox or the vm? Sorry for the silly question. I really only need the guest that's running nextcloud to have access to this software RAID array.

If I use a device/vendor id usb passthrough, would the vm still just have a virtual disk instead of access to the physical disk?

I see that we can mount a volume from the host directly to an lxc container. do containers also have the same edge case issues that vms have when handling md raid?
