Bit of a noob question, as I am just learning Proxmox and Linux, so please bear with me.

I have a remote hosted server, which a more experienced friend helped me set-up. I have clearly done something wrong and the server went offline. The hosting provider contacted me and said their technician had diagnosed and has said "The server gets stuck during the boot phase, with the message: (kernel panic on login, responds to keyboard but no ping.)"

They left the machine booted into rescue mode and provided the IP and SSH login details. I haven't really got a clue where to start... (although obvs I can SSH in). I have searched the internet and this forum for phrases like "proxmox remote recovery" and "proxmox host recovery" "recover from rescue mode" etc etc, without finding a similar situation, which rightly or wrongly is how I am learning / muddling my way through. I wanted to try FSCK, but understand I can't run as the disk is mounted, so that's out.

I don't expect war and peace as realise most of this is probably user-error, although I was only upgrading the LXCs to bullseye when it happened so wouldn't have expected anything like that to affect the Proxmox host. I just wanted pointing in roughly the right direction or even given a few links to similar issues if possible.

I could re-install from scratch, but prefer to try and recover if it's relatively simple as my friend did most of the Proxmox config and I had spent a while configuring the guests. And no I hadn't backed-up the VMs or LXCs or the host (short sharp lesson!).

Many thanks in advance,
Jon

you can save the config and make a reinstall. you can of course save the images to and the container. depend on your storage config
but why dont u ask your friend?

the journal (journalctl -b and journalctl -b-1) might give some indication what's going wrong, but other than than - PVE 5 is out of support/EOL, so if you have backups, just reinstalling with PVE 7.0 might be the faster option ;)
