I was a victim in the WebNX datacenter fire/water issue on my Proxmox server which has still been offline for over 2 weeks now so I just got a new webserver at another datacenter that I am formatting for running a few website VMs and I am trying to figure the best way to format it. I can't reference my current Proxmox I installed about 5 years ago but in the past I have always used ZFS with RAID but this server has 32GB RAM with 1 500GB SSD and 1 4TB HD, I'd like to use the SSD for a majority of the VMs/Containers (and OS) and the 4TB HD for non essential VMs, Containers, Backups, ISOs, Templates, etc. It came pre-formatted with ZFS on the SSD that allows VMs, Containers, Backups, ISOs, Templates to be stored on it but when I setup the 4TB with ZFS it doesn't allow me to use it for backups, ISOs/Templates, etc., only Containers and VMs. Since there will be no redundant/mirrored drives, is ZFS even essential or should one of both of the drives be formatted in something different (EXT4, XFS, etc.)? I know ZFS uses RAM and with 32 GB RAM I don't want to sacrifice RAM for the ZFS if it won't increase performance.
I understand there's no redundancy but I am planning on having another webserver at another location to essentially replicate between the two as the monthly cost to add additional redundant drives to this system is the same as getting another server elsewhere. I don't want to have the issue with one server again.
What is the best formats to use on the drives and how should I set them up exactly so they will store everything I want? Also any suggestions on a fileserver to use? I previously had the self-contained server with a pfSense VM, the Turnkey fileserver (so it doesn't store files in a VM but on ZFS directly), then my VMs/Containers.
