Hello everyone,

I am buying new hardware for our company and we will go with proxmox (goodbye forever vmware).

Our local reseller offered a really nice server hardware with U3 nvme ssd which we will most probably buy.

However, the server only supports one onboard M2 nvme, so he suggested using a hardware raid controller (https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/accessories/addon/AOC-SLG3-2M2.php) for installing the OS.

What's your take on this?
Go for the hardware raid controller or go for single drive only for the OS?

In newer servers, you often have the option to buy a M.2-based dual hardware raid (e.g. Dell BOSS), which is perfect for the OS if you get still get small devices. Thedefault 480 GB are overkill for PVE.With such a card you have all other slows available for e.g. CEPH disks. If you're already going with ZFS on the disks, just install the OS on your normal pool.

Do the BOSS device allows to use NVMEs with PLP aka M2. 22110?

I usually use sas drives for Proxmox OS, yes in hardware raid two of them. NEver had problems. With newer let's say supermicro servers, i go with 256gb nvme/m.2/whatever and zfs for os.
