Hardware for PVE...Dual Opteron, SuperMicro Thomas K****?

Actually we're using PVE with MSI/AM3/PhenomX4/3Ware9550 and 8GB Memory, 6x500GB SATA. It works fine, CPU is strong, but for our applications only 8GB Memory is too small to be fully usefull. We liked to change to server hardware - today you're limited to 4x2GB with the consumer boards. If there would be 4GB modules we probably would better cluster cheap stuff.
We're using development software for FPGA, PCB, Schematic and even Software Development inside the (K)VMs.
Referring to people we allready talked to, our requirements are quite different...we only have got minimal IO on the networkinterfaces (X11/RDP). Previously we tried to use VMWareESX but it was poor regarding cpu-strength at least at the config we got - PVE really
_rocks_ in comparsion :-)).

I've had a look on the data of machines from SUN/HP/DELL, which are used for infrastructure in our company but they don't really match the requirements and take money for features I don't need. I don't need better disks. I even need Opteron, because of maintainance contracts.

At smaller companies I often hear Thomas K****. My configuration: 32GB, Dual Opteron45nm and 8x500GB SATA and 3 Years 24h-Support is around 5000 EUR. Compared to competition that's quite good.
We intend to put the new unit in a cluster with the old Phenom (probably using DRBD, which seems to be available for production later this year.
If it's still nice we would take a second server next year and replace the Phenom.

Is somebody out here who makes use of such configuration (at least a SuperMicro-Mainboard/Opteron)?
Did you have a look at different RAID modes at load condition?
We're currently using RAID5 on five disks. We're not really happy with it. If we dublicate a VM in command line the other machines nearly freeze for that time ... that's not nice.
Now we thought of RAID-5 (4 Disks) and additional RAID0/1 for System or one RAID10 but don't know how the 3Ware-Controler performs with this configurations PVE reinstall is very fast therefore we are not strictly required to protect the system if we can get more performance on the other hand.

Many thanks in advance!

First, this is an English support forum only.

try searching the forum for supermicro, some other users get very good results (mainly with Intel).

e.g. http://www.proxmox.com/forum/showthread.php?p=10770#poststop

Especially the Adaptec 5805z speeds up the system. - use raid10 with 4, 6 or 8 disks.

We are already in contact with TK, so I suggest you should ask them if their offer is working with Proxmox VE - the more potential customers push them the faster they offer certified servers for Proxmox VE.

If you need German speaking support, contact office@proxmox.com directly.

I recogniced my "language mistake" one hour before but you were faster.
Don't know why I used german, excuse me :-(

We inteded to discuss one month try-and-buy with them. It should be much easier to speak than to SUN or HP.

Adaptec, ok.
Does PVE support the Adaptec 5805z out of the box?

yes, out of the box. I really like the z series, as you do not need to replace the BBU after two or three years of operation.

see this howto describing the installation of the management tool.
