Freenas as bare metal or on Proxmox?

I'm setting up a Freenas, but I wonder if I should use separate hardware for it or set up a proxmox server and run Freenas as a VM? That way I could look at running a few other VMs such as a firewall, or others. I would rather run proxmox as the hypervisor with Freenas as the VM with others rather than running stuff inside Freenas...

Been debated at length many times. It's possible to run FreeNAS or TrueNAS as a VM with varying degrees of complexity but it necessarily requires some compromise as it will never be as good as running on dedicated hardware.

If all you need is fileshares, you can do that quite well on the proxmox server itself (just install Samba) and in some cases that can be better solution but it depends on what your needs are.
