First success: 64-bit Java Plug-in for 64-bit Firefox from Sun

hi,

a lot of people waits for the sun java plugin for 64-bit (this plugin is needed to get access to the Proxmox VE console).

see this open bug from sun:

now I installed the snapshot version - connecting successfully to the Proxmox console.

what I did (I tested on Ubuntu 8.04 - 64-bit):
download from here: http://download.java.net/jdk6/

I grabbed the Linux x64 self-extracting JDK file
(I used http://www.java.net/download/jdk6/6...k-6u12-ea-bin-b02-linux-amd64-08_dec_2008.bin)

after installed I had to manually link the java-6-sun-1.6.0.12/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so in the Firefox plugins directory.

pls note, still beta but due to the bug report from Sun the final version is scheduled for early 2009.

Wow, finally! After umpteen months to get this done, Sun finally almost has it out...

Java 64-bit Browser-Plug-in finally released from Sun

Sun released the final version of their 64-bit browser plug-in (Version 6 Update 12)

The Proxmox VE console only works with the Sun plug-in and it was a pain that this was not available on 64-bit systems.

If you are looking for debian package they just entered SID on the 6th and will be in Lenny. They should be installable on Ubuntu if you want.

Yes that's what I meant by "will be Lenny" sorry I wasn't clearer

I used these instructions to get through this issue. Debian repo and Ubuntu repo installs did not work for me (as explained above).

On top of removing all other java installs, this is the step that helped out a lot:

Create a link (ln) pointing to the Java plugin (file <JRE_FOLDER>/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so) in the ~/.mozilla/plugins folder (to let Firefox know where the new plugin is...) - maybe you will have to create this folder (I had to)

Java is still a little buggy, it crashes now and then, but it is a hell of a lot better than running IE6 in wine.
