Dude

Do I need to have shared storage? Is it required to fulfill the cluster function?
Hi,
no but migration of VMs is much easier with shared storage, because only the RAM of an VM must be migrated.

And if one node die, you can start the VMs on another node (automaticly with HA). If an VM used local storage, you must fix your node besfore you can start the VMs again.

Great answer! Great reasoning Where can I get information like that answer
not sure what exactly you are asking here (the last post, not the OP)
but just want to add as an FYI:
the answers given in this thread applies for Proxmox only.

it is never a 100% requirements to have a shared storage with cluster, but is highly recommended option most of the time, except that other Cluster capable OS more often than none DO REQUIRE shared storage in the form of a SAN or at the very least NAS to be used for cluster setup if a HA setup is expected especially in Virtualization configuration. that if you want to be able to have a VM Live failover if a node dies. a good example is Microsoft Hyper-V cluster version before 2016.
that said, there are a ways to setup cluster even in HA mode by using a third party workaround utilities like DRBD for Linux or SolarWinds VSAN(linux and windows) setup for local storage replication/mirroring . and starting with MS server 2016 an MS own shared storage replication solution that works similar to DRBD or VSAN using local storage replication/mirroring.

*caugh* ceph is built in to proxmox *caugh*

:-) very funny alexskysilk :-)
BUT true. ceph is built into Proxmoc. however it seams it is not overly popular option for whatever reason.
and it is not the same thing. I am not even sure that ceph can replace the need for external shared storage when building HA cluster on proxmox. care to point to a nice how-to ?

I am not sure where you got that idea. Ceph has the most momentum then any other clustered FS outside of Lustre or GPFS.

and it is not the same thing.
That is true. the solutions you propose are not designed for virtualization. Ceph RBD is. Consequently, it provides much more functionality that is relevant. The MS Storage Spaces solution looks promising but as I understand its Windows only.

I think you may want to read the following:

not sure which solution you refer to.
the Starwind VSAN is absolutely designed for and works with virtualization and clustering.
DRBD have been used and is used today for proxmox HA cluster with only local storage option, no san or nas shared storage. I have seen a lot of references to both of this as an alternatives to shared storage. I am using Starwind vsan at the office for Hyper-v cluster setup.

may be i did not state it clearly, but I meant to say that ceph is not overly popular for home lab use.
I have seen a lot of questions about it and no answers were overly encouraging when it came to home use. Enterprise , maybe , but home use not so much. I am not claiming to be right 100% ,
time change fast, but that is overall impression I got so far.

thanks for the links, i will go over them and see if I misunderstand the tech involved.
