Creating new CT without template

Hi all, new to proxmox, first post.
I want to install a new container from scratch without using a template. Is this possible?

You could also use dab from Proxmox:

I've noticed that there is a difference in how this is handled between different flavors of Linux. Is it safe to say that its going to need a good deal of knowledge to create a template for a version of Linux that is not covered in these tutorials?
