CPU type "max" not working in cluster

Hello,
I have a cluster of five proxmox 8. I tried cpu type "max" on VMs so that I could migrate a VM without issues, but that type does not work The CPU it selects is from the host hosting the VM, ignoring the max cpu that could be used on the cluster.

Any tricks to get this option to work? My max cpu should be a Xeon X5675, which in the cpu list would that be?

Also, in the cluster there is a Dell R230 and the cpu type it shows in summary of that server is "Genuine Intel(R) CPU 0000 @ 3.20GHz (1 socket)", but there are two Xeon E3-1240v6 quad core. It does report eight cores correctly.

Thanks.

May I ask where you got this from? In my "<node> --> <vm> --> Hardware --> Processors --> Type (Drop-Down)" there is no such beast.

If you want interoperability between nodes with different CPUs try "x86-64-v<n>".
Under CPU type, at the bottom in QEMU, there is one "max". I found a page on the forum that explains that this cpu type is for the cluster, which will decide the max CPU type that can be used across the cluster. I taught that this was a great feature :), but it does not work :(.

Please provide a link. QEMU documentation states that max is host + all features that can be (reasonably efficiently) emulated and has no regards for or even known anything about clusters. Proxmox always advises to use the newest CPU type that is compatible with all your CPUs and better to only cluster nodes with the same CPU (brand and/or family).

I tried Westmere-IBRS but it refused to start the VM saying the feature is not available on the CPU.
Maybe the CPU firmware is not up to date or no update was ever provided by Intel since the whole Spectre debacle? Try updating the motherboard firmware/BIOS and/or install the latest intel-microcode (apt-get install intel-microcode, but you need to have non-free-firmware enabled).
