Couple of starting out questions

You did remember to install either gtk2 or gtk3 and build the viewer using the installed gtk version?

You mean install gtk2 or gkt3 on OSX? Noooo... I did not do that. I just looked at the page and they listed a bundle. I opened that and the application said it needed X11. The next time I ran it, it didn't say anything else. Installing X11 on OSX is getting a pretty strange in terms of normal OSX usability. No one these days on the OSX side of things really uses it. To install gtk2 or gkt3 on OSX is something pretty far out. In the end to get a solution that people on OSX are actually going to use, this cant be a requirement. There are some OSX apps which are developed under QT and run on the mac but most of these look pretty hideous... Maybe I just misunderstood...?

Also since both dell optiplex 755's have the same BIOS settings is there anything else you would recommend trying to allow proxmox to run on the original machine?

Actually taking a look through the BIOS settings again I found the difference in the machine. It turns out to run on the Dell OptiPlex 755 with latest BIOS, one needs to set the trusted execution to "OFF"... This seems fairly counter-intuitive to me, but with this setting I can now create KVM VM's...

Thanks All!

Onto the question about VNC and the console. I installed Java and tried out the console. (I originally tried it inside a mac VM but the thing flashed like crazy and looked pretty hideous.) So I installed Java on my main platform and then retested. The console through java still looks really bad. It looks like the following:

(Note the icon munging on the lhs, and also the terminal doesn't display correctly if you try and bring it up, etc.)

So I am then trying to get some form of VNC running nicely. The instructions on: http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Vnc_2.0 look to be the thing I need, and I have followed them through to the stage test debug setup. However after setting up the /etc/inetd.conf file correctly I still can't seem to log on even from the same local subnet using tigervnc. At the point it asks me for my login:

No matter what I put in here it always says authentication failed. Is there some other setting which I need to change?

Thanks in advance!

For username you must use: root@pam. Is this the username you use?
Ahhh! That worked. Thanks!

However, the screen is still kind of messed up, just as the console graphic above showed. Is this a standardly known thing which is misconfigured? Or I am just lucky enough to be the only one seeing this? :)

Strangely a normal mac VNC client looked fine (I used chicken of the VNC...)

Thanks!

I think it is a Unity thing (window manager in Ubuntu). Try installing another distro or change window manager in Ubuntu (eg. apt-get install xfce)

Change the virtual display in the vm settings to VMware compatible.

Ahh... Thanks for the info. So another likely noob question. I tried the installing a new KVM VM of ubuntu server (To which i as going to add xfce), but the console (through java or now through tiger VNC is not connecting / displaying anything. Thus how do I step through the server install process?

Thanks!

Ahhh! That did it! My tigerVNC session now looks like a normal VNC session! (I suspect this will work for the java driven console as well then? (I have already re-removed java after it wasn't working for me the first time...)

Ok my next question is then which is the best set of instructions for converting a VMWare machine to a KVM one. It looks like this can be scripted yet this doesn't seem to be built into proxmox?? I would just think there would be some setting in the upload or something which was to covert from a VMWare machine to a KVM. In fact there likely is but I mist have just missed it...

So, is the canonical set of instructions for doing this machine to machine conversion at: http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Migration_of_servers_to_Proxmox_VE#VMware_to_Proxmox_VE_.28KVM.29

or is there another set of instructions which are more "modern"?

Thanks in advance again!!
