Clone of VM vs Clone of VM using Snapshot

Hey,

what exactly do you mean with "Clone of VM using Snapshot"?

When I want to make a clone of VM when there is no snapshot configured, I will only see an option to define target storage but when snapshot of VM is already existing, there is one more option in the wizard "saying choose snapshot" which you would like to use to make a clone
that is what i was referring

If you clone a VM that does not have any snapshots, you make a clone of its current state, the same happens if you have snapshots but select current. If you have snapshots of the VM and you select one of those, the created clone will be in the same state as the VM when the snapshot was taken. For more information about cloning VMs take a look at [1].

I understand that, but when I have created a snapshot for example 8am in the morning and I want to take a backup at 10am. So 8am snapshot will have state which 2 hrs older than current state. Do you mean to see "current" means it will take current state at 10am or it will use the last snapshot taken at 8am for cloning

Not very clear from the link. you shared

"current" does not refer to the latest snapshot. In your example, it would take the current state, not the latest snapshot. I hope I understood your question correctly and this answers it :D

Note: The link was for more general information about cloning, however, it was not meant to answer what you've asked.

Yaa I got that. Now I have follow up question. When the disks are deployed using ceph according to ceph document
https://docs.ceph.com/en/latest/rbd/rbd-snapshot/#getting-started-with-layering

The process is Create a block Image> Create Snapshot> Protect the Snapshot> Clone Snapshot.

So according to this when snapshot target is rbd and source image is also rbd, I should see a snapshot in rbd repository. Which I am getting, I am looking here how to do the subsequent steps ie Protect the snapshot and then Clone that snapshot for faster cloning.

Can I convert snapshot into template??
