Citrix VPX appliance (freeBSD) not booting.

Hello all,

We're evaluating Proxmox and have several appliances/vms that we've been using and need running if Proxmox is going to work for us. One of them is a Citrix VPX appliance that uses freeBSD.

We're using a qcow2 image and copy it in place of the image created when creating the VM. I've tried setting the drive to use IDE and VIRTIO drivers, and I've tried various CPU settings, but the system always boots to the point of freeBSD saying "Loading /boot/defaults/loader.conf" and it hangs. I copied the image down to my system that's running KVM/libvirt with virtual machine manager and it boots just fine on my system.

Any ideas on what I can try and how I can debug, or get some sort of verbose logging to find where the problem is?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks!

Brian

You can start the VM in Proxmox VE, login via SSH and get the whole command line of kvm (via ps), then compare it to your working configuration (also via ps) on your machine. Maybe you spot a difference.

Sorry to bump such an old thread, but in case others come across this:

Huge thanks to Andrew Thrift in this mailing list thread: https://lists.proxmox.com/pipermail/pve-devel/2016-May/021266.html

Had the same exact issue using the Citrix VPX QCOW2 image on ProxMox 6.3-3, the trick was the following:

Set CPU to kvm64, set "OS" to "Other", ensure virtio-block and virtio-net are used for all disk and NIC hardware attached, and lastly, add a serial port to the VM. After tweaking all of the above (most notably, adding a serial port), I was able to get my NSVPX appliance to boot successfully.
