Can I install proxmox on another machine than I will run it?

I am waiting for NUC to be used as PVE, but in the meantime on my PC I have SSD where I want to install proxmox to. Can I install PVE on that disk on my PC, and when NUC comes, just insert that SSD there and boot? Or better install it when SSD on the PC I want to use as PVE?

I just wanted to save myself sometime, while I wait for PC, to prepare everything.

That should work, but may require some fiddling with BIOS settings on the NUC once it arrives. Depending on how you set it up, Grub or systemd-boot may also need some adjustments.

By fiddling with BIOS you mean enable virtualization? I thought I will have to do that no matter how I install PVE? Or what settings in particular will I need to fiddle because installation went on another PC? Buy system boot you mean select what disk to boot from in BIOS?

No I mean that whether you can just directly boot from that disk also depends on other factors e.g., is secure boot enabled, what does the boot order look like and so on. However, yes you will have to enable virtualization no matter what.

No, by systemd-boot/GRUB I mean the bootloader. Systemd-boot is only active when using zfs on a UEFI system, so this may handle such a change nicely (haven't tested it, but it should). GRUB setups may require some changes (again, haven't tested it), but should work in a default setup, if I am not mistaken.
