Hi guys

I would like to convert my actual fileserver into a proxmox server and reinstall my fileserver in a kvm guest.

here my hw-config:
Intel Core2due 3.0GHz
8GB RAM
2x 1Gb NICs
2x 250GB HW-Raid1 for boot and kvm clients
5x 1TB for my Fileserver

should i create on the proxmox server a software raid5 and then assign a raw disk to my Fileserver guest, or should i directly assign the disks to the KVM guest and create on top of them the software raid (or use zfs).

With which config can i achive a better performance for the fileserver?
With performance i mean write/read over network :)

or can somebody suggest to me another config??

thx in adv.

Hello Beta 17

Best performance you will have if you consider to invest some money in a real Hardware Raid controller. Do not use Software Raid if you like to have fun with your server.
If you go for a Hardware Raid controller, check the compatibility of the vendor for The supported Hard drives.

it's only for home use and i need to evaluate the best config in performance with the existing hardware! i know that a raid card would perform much better as a software raid, but i don't have the money to spend in a raid card :(

if you do not follow the recommendations why do you ask? I am really amused about people wanting all but are not prepared to invest something. btw, softraid is not supported.

is the second way to assign the disks directly to a kvm guest and create from them a raid also not supported?

I am bit confused about your hardware, you write about '2x 250GB HW-Raid1', so you have a hardware raid card?

a raid case cannot create a raid volume.

this looks like a fake raid solutions? means without software in the host it does not work. similar to all host raid, bios based "raid" solutions. but yes, never seen this case before.

you don't need any software to run this kind of case, the only thing you need to do is to set a few little switches on the back to configure the raid level you want!on the back got only one sata port to connecto to the mobo... that's it! nice tool for that price!

ok, next step for me is to check on ebay for a used and supported raidcard! i thought of a Highpoint RocketRAID 2320!
