Backup via Proxmox-backup-client (physical machines)

Dear all:

I'm trying to integrate our physical machines into the PBS.

For the first Ubuntu machines, the first initial backups via proxmox-backup-client have succeeded -- I'll come back with build-questions for RPM-based distros!

But I did not find "best practice" advice how to set up the proxmox-backup-client. I am assuming that a cronjob at my planned interval is the way to get the repeat.

What I am missing is how to integrate the account information. I've tried to generate a API token, but can't work the <user>@<realm>!<token_name>@<machine>:<datastore> on the command line.
The API token value is stored in a PBS_PASSWORD=c4123456-2222-4444-55a9-eeeeeeaaddff shell variable, but when I try to start the backup with:

proxmox-backup-client backup root.pxar:/ --include-dev /boot/efi --repository root@pam!host1_token@x.y.z.a:datastore1

the bash shell complains about the "!", and escaping the bang with "\!" doesn't work either, putting the complete repository into quotes also fails me.

What is the best way to store the credentials and feed them to the client?
What is the best practice to set up for multiple machines, security-wise? For every machine a different API key? For every machine, a different user?

Thank you!!
